The company posted a photo of the explosion of the Challenger space shuttle, mistaking it for fireworks....
They apologized by saying it was one of their international employees who was born after the event occurred. What a coincidence.

my husband and I have a long running joke about american apparel, and their efforts to get all twenty year olds to wear the ugliest, least flattering clothes possible. Also, I hate their advertising campaigns, and the guy who used to run it is a Scum Bag.

What a bunch of dumbasses. I don't understand how one company can continue to make such huge missteps and act baffled and like it was an honest mistake every time. And the apologies are always ridiculous - I don't care how old you are, that does not look like fireworks. At all.

As someone that watched the Challenger explode on TV, live, in grade school, married to someone that lived in Europe at the time, I can tell you all that my husband had no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned the Challenger explosion, and he's normally pretty well versed in world events.
I do think this is just another example that shows how some companies are really an extension of the person in charge (Lululemon also comes to mind).

Yeah I saw this yesterday and was pissed. As someone who was born after the Challenger explosion, this is ridiculous. What an eff-ed up company.

@looch: My husband didn't know about the event either. But he did realize the photo was of some type of explosion and not fireworks.

Seriously?! You can't tell me there's not one person working at the company who remembers this event?! Besides, the person posting must have googled something in order to come up with the photo.

Umm, as someone born in 1987, I take offense to their suggestion that the person who posted was just too young to know any better. Most people are aware that the we'd still existed before they were born. Youth is not an excuse for ignorance! Nice try...

@looch: I remember watching it in school too. I was in kindergarten. It was hard to comprehend at the time.
