I just saw that American Girl is retiring Molly!
I had Samantha growing up (also retired now). I kind of want to get Molly for DD because I always wanted her... but then I feel silly buying it now, knowing she won't be able to play with her for a while.
Do you get sad (or feel old), when companies start retiring items that you loved as a kid?

Noooo! We're naming our little girl Molly and I was so excited about getting her the Molly doll when she's older! Think I should just buy it now before they retire her?

@lawbee11: We actually like Molly if we had another girl, but who knows if that will happen. I am thinking of pulling the trigger and just getting her.

Awww. That's sad!! I like Molly a lot. I never had one of these dolls, though. Cabbage Patch kids were my thing.

@ms.janedoe: I never played with Samantha except to hold her while I read all the books. I was always super careful because my mom made a big deal about how expensive she was and that I needed to take good care of her.

I had Samantha and a Girl of Today growing up. When DH and I were dating they retired Felicity and I had always wanted her so DH bought her for me as a Christmas gift.

Talk about old..I went nostalgic the other month and bought an educational robot I had in my childhood (as seen on Argo). It has an 8 track tape!
Btw I bought LO a Karito Kids doll, kinda like American Girls but international, when she was super young- like six months old. I didn't have those when I was young!

@lawbee11: I just saw on FB that they were retiring her. On the AG website, there's no date listed so I'm not sure. I think I'm going to do the book series too... although part of me wants to go find some "vintage" ones to match my Samantha set

An outrage! I had Samantha, but Molly was my next choice (I never got her). She was plucky, wore glasses (like me back in the day), and I dug her Mary Janes. I still think her red schoolbag is chic. 
(Oh Pleasant Company, you were such a tease!)

Molly was always my favorite! I loved her school accessories - her little desk and lunch box; ack! Samantha's birthday party food was adorable too; I have a serious obsession with pretend food.

Aww! I loved Molly! I had all the American Girl doll books (Felicity, Kirsten, Addy, Samantha & Molly) but most were ruined when our basement flooded 
so depressing. I would have loved to save them for LO.

@honeybear: I've read that article before and LOVED it, I hate that they've watered down the adventure of the dolls and the books!
@deerylou: I also love pretend food. I've been trying to figure out how old LO needs to be before we get her a play kitchen and I go to down on all of the fun food accessories to go with it!

I still have my Josefina and Kit doll from when I was little! They are boxed up and my little sister plays with them when she comes over. I hope to have a DD who will play with them

I had Molly too! Actually probably still have her at my mom's house somewhere.... I loved these books when I was little and read every one. I teach 2nd and they are not popular right now. I did have a student read a bunch of them this year though and I totally geeked out and we wrote notes back and forth about them on her reading log.

I had a Bitty Baby doll that I went everywhere with and I remember taking out the American girl books from the library multiple times. My favorite was always Felicity because I love revolutionary war America. I finally saved up enough of my own money to buy her. So sad that they are retiring Molly too! I hate the direction that they are going with now with the dolls

My parents never bought me a doll, but I loved reading all the books. I was never really into dolls generally, but my neighbor had three and I though they were pretty cool.
Maybe I should stock up on books for a future little one.

Years ago they said they were going to retire Felicity, and my little sister and I started a "Save Felicity" campaign. We wrote a petition and got tons of signatures, we made sashes and marched... it was hilarious. And they listened! They sent us letter saying they had reconsidered. And then they ended up making a Felicity movie a couple years later.

@Arden: @Leialou: I read and collected some of the series - Samantha, Kirsten, Felicity, and Molly mostly but some Kit. I'm not sure if I still have any of the books or not and I didn't really reread them. They were fun but really easy reads, you know?

I always wanted a Molly doll. She was my favorite character! Everytime I see an American girl commercial I'm always like, there's the christmas present I never got

@NaturallyCathy: I never had a doll!! My mom was appalled at how overpriced they are. But somehow she has no issue buying one for her granddaughter!
