Ugh!!

Daaaaaaaang. This makes me not want to tell anyone I'm at the hospital... or confiscate their phones...

WHOA! What a terrible comment! I would be so peeved as the parent... AND I would say something to the aunt! UGH!

We didn't announce P's birth until the next day & no family but my mom came to the hospital so there was no spilling the beans by someone else!

I feel like there is a cultural desire to be the "first" to know things.... makes you seem like you're "in the know" or in some sort of "inner circle" or "exclusive. I see this all over facebook.

A friend posted on my other friends wall about her engagement before she wanted social media to know because she hadn't told family yet, and even included a note that said "i hope this isn't against etiquette, but i'm happy to say...." I mean, if you have to question if it's against etiquette maybe you shouldn't be doing it?

i also had another friend post on twitter BEFORE his roommate proposed to his now fiance hinting that it would happen soon. Luckily SHE didn't have twitter, but others did and heard the news before it even happened

I also see tons of things like "oh yeah, i heard about that last week" or "i first saw this video a month ago but now i want to post it"... which to me just indicates that people want to be first with everything.

@LaughLines: I 100% agree with you. I see it all over social media sites also! So weird to me. Life is one big popularity contest. *sigh*

@BelugaBean: How did the people respond when you told them? I'm thinking about doing this but I'm kind of a people pleaser and worry I'll come off as a big bitch?

@grizz: Ah! Thanks, that's good to hear. I know of a few people in my family who would definitely go and post things before we did so that's why I'd like to make it clear that it's something WE will do, not for THEM to do.

Thankfully my parents hardly understand facebook so that shouldn't be a problem!

@grizz: ah! Yea, I can see where people might find it less exciting about not ever posting, but I totally get why you're doing it! We have so much family overseas that it's really nice to be able to share with facebook. However, I've tried to make my facebook as private as possibly and same with my husbands and MIL & FIL.

I also can't believe your MIL posted about you being pregnant! Id be so upset.

How awful!! We are totally the same as you. No facebook information until we can make the announcement ourselves.

How obnoxious.

I made it very clear to our families not to say anything until we made the announcement. LO was born at 11:14 pm and was sent to the NICU so we didn't make the announcement until the next morning due to absolute exhaustion. I then gave the okay for my sisters, mom, ect. to post what they wanted.

I sent a message to my family asking them when we text about her arrival to please not put anything on FB till we do for this reason. Another reason why we waited three hours to text anyone after she was born. So we had time to text our friends.

I've struggled with whether or not to say something to my ILs and have decided against it. In the grand scheme of things, them announcing before me, while rude and frustrating beyond belief, isn't important. LO arriving safely and us finally getting to meet the little boy we already love so much is the important part.

I just have to remind myself of that... Over and over again lol.

It's also more important that we tell them over the phone than them hearing on Facebook so we will (and by we, I mean DH, I'm not calling anyone lol, I'll be too busy staring at my beautiful son!) call them then post. And honestly, it might be a few days before I get around to it, I'll be a little preoccupied I'm sure

That's beyond rude!

My sister found out my grandpa passed away through facebook. My cousin posted it before anybody called her. Awful!

I didn't mind that people posted LO's birth on facebook though. I was too busy to do it.
