I am teaching lo to use sign language, and I looked through all the old threads (ok, not alllll, but quite a few) and wondered one thing.
Do you teach your lo sign language to get through the times before they can really verbally communicate or for a life long skill?

When I start teaching LO, I plan to continue teaching her. Sign language was a big part of my upbringing, and I have had many positive experiences in the Deaf community. Hopefully LO will inherit my passion for ASL.

We started ASL intending it to be another communication tool we could rely on when needed, but my personal interest has grown since introducing signs to my family. I 'm actually working on some online ASL classes right now, and I hope to keep teaching my kids as I learn more, myself.

I took ASL in college, I would love to introduce it mroe into my family, but so far at 12 months LO isn't catching on as much as I expected. I've been doing 5 basic signs for months now.

I started teaching it to her just to get through the times before she could communicate verbally. We didn't use sign language a lot and she picked up her basic need words pretty fast and is now very verbal so we completely stopped using it.

We're using it in the interim- currently working on "more" and "all done".

@Baby Boy Mom: Good to know, I still do it all the time but she just laughs at me now or shakes her head to answer when I ask "do you want more" or "all done?"

I was using it to get through the times when she couldn't use words. We still use it at 14 months even though she knows a few words. We are currently working on "please"

We are mainly just using it now to aid in her communication. She signs more and all done, I haven't started any others yet!

We did a few basic signs (like "more" and "all done") that she used before she had words to express those ideas. Those really came in handy for us for awhile (I'd say she used them from 9 or 10 months to a year). We then had a period of overlap where she both signed and spoke, and now (at 15 months) she generally just says "more" or "all done".
"Milk" and "diaper change" never caught on because she was saying "mum mum" or "ba ba" and "poo poo" before she really learned the signs.

I haven't stayed with my nannied kiddos past their toddler years but for my own I definitely want it to be a life long skill. I used it working with people with disabilities and I would be thankful if I ever needed to interact with someone who communicates primarily through sign.
