@Codeitall's poll made me think of another question that drives me INSANE about my own DH. We have a single, deep kitchen sink. There's a drying rack on the counter to the right of the sink.
Would you put dirty dishes IN THE SINK or on the counter next to it?

It depends:
If I have a dishwasher, they'll go in the sink (or just in the dishwasher).
Without a dishwasher, they go on the counter so the sink is clear for dish washing.

I like to put the dishes in the sink, but my DH (who does the dishes) prefers them on the counter. Something about not liking all the dishes below getting wet while he's washing. I don't get it, but it's his chore so whatever. As long as he does them soon after the meals and I have counter space again when I need it, I don't push it.

In your situation I would put them next to the sink. I take care of the dishes at our house so it drives me absolutely bat shit crazy when he piles dirty dishes in the sink just to clear them off the counter... Then he proceeds to dump old milk out of sippy cups into the sink, or cuts the tops off of strawberries into the sink ontop of everything... Then freaking leaves it!
I'm not stabby about this at all.

A little of both. I hate having a sink full of dirty dishes, and I don’t like having dishes in the sink if I need to, like, drain the pasta, but I also don’t like a pile of dishes beside the sink. Basically I just always wash the dishes.

So interesting and this is already eye opening haha. I like them IN the sink and get stabby about them being left on the counter next to it. We do have a dishwasher so they just go in the sink until we either wash them or the dishwasher is done. I totally see your point though @Sams Mom, but for some reason it bothers me more the other way!

I put them in the sink. It makes the counter look cluttered if they're on the counter.
My husband drives me nuts by not washing food off dishes before putting them in the sink. He just places them in there with everything still on the plate...

We have a drying rack to the left of the sink. I prefer dishes to the right of the sink (above the dishwasher) so I can have the sink clear for washing things and everything flows right to left, dirty to clean. But it doesn’t bother me when things are put in the sink unless it’s so full I have to take things out to wash anything. It does make me twitchy when dirty things get left on the clean side though.

In this case, I would rinse dirty dishes right away and neatly stack them inside the sink ready for filling the sink with hot soapy water for washing. I'm of the school that you clean off the food/rinse a dish right away, which to me means they stay in the sink, otherwise you're getting the counter all wet.

We have very little counter space but a pretty large sink so dishes go in there. We have an over the sink drying rack (no dishwasher). The only time the dishes go on the counter are when we are getting ready to wash them.

dishwasher all the time. sink if the dishwasher is running. I try to run it at night before bed and unload in the morning within an hour.

Now with a LO that likes to test the limits of his reach dirty dishes should go directly in the sink. Those dishes should be scraped clean prior to going in there AND you better dare not turn on the water and make them icky. The drying rack is reserved for clean dishes. We have a dishwasher, but we only use it once or twice a year when have a lot of people over and are using our ceramic plates.

@HappyBaker: it depends. There are benefits to both ways. Putting it in the sink means you can soak it so it is easier to wash later. But since you only have 1 sink that means you have no Sino space left to rinse things.

Next to the sink...
Typically I rinse items right away and then put them in the dishwasher. If it's full I'll rinse items and stack next to the sink. I guess I like the sink clear so I can rinse any items out without just putting all the gunk on the already-rinsed dishes.

Nothing in sink or counter. Rinsed and into dishwasher immediately. Anything else does not make sense to me!

Counter. I hate dirty dishes in the sink. DH prefers them in the sink and it’s his chore so I do what he wants. But if there are a bunch of dishes covered in yucky water I will not help out. It just feels like an incubator.

Both.
If it needs to soak, put it in the sink. Otherwise, put it on the counter. We need the sink clear to empty other items and to get water. We have water filtration. If I wasn't so anal about how the dishwasher was loaded, I would want DH to do that, but I usually end up redoing his work, so that everything fits.

Both. We're bottle feeding and go through a million cups and dishes a day so there are often a couple things in the sink but then they go in the dishwasher. I get irritated when people put too much in the sink because I can't wash it when it's overloaded anyway, or even rinse for the dishwasher.
