I'm in a wedding this fall, and a friend is traveling with us and wants to try AirBnB. A separate condo or house is what we're looking at, not a shared space with a stranger! Has anyone had any experience with this? We usually use VRBO.com

I used homeaway.com too and had a good experience if you want to check it out.
I had friends that came to my wedding that used airbnb and had a good experience. I contacted an owner, she responded very quick but unfortunately something came up and the place wasn't available for the days we wanted. I'd use them if a suitable space came up!

@snowjewelz: There are some lovely little beach houses available during our dates! DH is skeptical because he thinks of it as only places you rent while the owner is also in the home.

@grizz: You can filter it so that it only shows options where you have the whole place to yourself! I feel like it's pretty much the same thing as the other vacation home websites except airbnb can probably get you something cheaper.

My sister-in-laws do airbnb with their apartment in NYC. They do both rentals with them there and when they are out of town. In fact, they nearly always rent whenever they're gone for a trip. They've always said it's a really good experience for them.

I've used it a few times, in Lisbon and then when we moved to Vienna and were apartment hunting. I had great experiences both times.

@grizz: My SO and I just used it in Barcelona and Paris and had good experiences in both places. We made sure to rent from someone who was very active and who's unit had a lot of recent reviews. We found everything to be pretty much as described in the listing and both hosts were incredibly friendly and welcoming!
Let me know if you have any specific questions.
ETA: I also liked that the money is "held" by the company until you check in so you don't have to worry about the person running off with your money/scamming you

We have used it before...it was a great experience, so we're doing it again in a few weeks! I definitely feel better choosing some place with lots of positive reviews.

Our friends have used it quite a few times when they are travelling, and have had only good things to say!

We booked a house for our family vacation in Austin at the beginning of July. I like that we found a place that will fit 7 of us with beds, a kitchen, and has a local vibe. Plus it's much cheaper doing it this way than all of us getting separate hotel rooms.

Some friends and I rented a house in Palm Springs through air bnb and it was great! I use the filter to rent the entire home.

We rented a full house for my in laws during our wedding week, and it was really great. There are reviews on Air B&B, and those really helped us choose the right rental.

I have had great experiences and much prefer renting houses/apts when we travel to staying in a hotel, especially with a kid.

Yep, love it. I think it's pretty dependent on the individual who's listing the property though...much like vrbo.

I've used it a few times traveling here in the US and my husband used it a couple of times traveling in Europe. We had mostly good experiences but 2 semi-bad experiences.

Used it for an apartment in Brooklyn and a cabin in Vermont, great both times, both times the owner was not there and we had the places to ourselves.

@septca: YES! We need a kitchen, space for our LOs to play, and separate sleeping quarters for the LOs so we don't have to go to bed at 7:30 ourselves
A hotel would make me nuts!

We've done it in Montreal and Paris and had a great experience both times. In both cases, we rented out the whole apartment and chose rentals with lots of good recommendations. I always recommend airbnb to people. I would, however, try to stick to places with existing reviews or at least have some communication with the renter beforehand- both of the people we rented from were friendly, prompt, and helpful in their replies, which made us feel better about staying there.

@grizz: yes!! Love it. We used it in May for 2 different places (PR & FL). I tried homeaway.com but our specific home was a scam and they have zero background checks, unlike airbnb). I posted about it, actually.

I had a hard time getting owners to respond to me when I tried using it. Perhaps I was just unlucky.

My friend rents out his place on air bnb. I rented it once when we i was hosting a bachelorette party since it was way cheaper than a hotel
