E uses his pacis to self soothe... meaning he has one in his mouth and one in each hand. He rubs them on his face and on his eyes and squeezes the nipples to help himself fall asleep. It just occurred to me that this is going to make weening him off the paci super hard.
I've tried to get him attached to a stuffed animal or one of those blankets with an animal head, but he's just not interested. Anyone have any luck or any tips for getting a one year old to attach to a lovey?

I tried giving her a small blanket and stuffed animal but she wants her thumb.

Have you tried a tag blanket? Mine had no interest in loveys with the animal heads or stuffed animals. She loved the tag blanket, which i gave to her at the 5 month mark. At the 14.5 month mark, she still loves it.

This is totally us too! I have no suggestions, but I'm following this thread. DD has one in her mouth, and one in each hand, and she soothes herself to sleep by swapping the different binkies in and out of her mouth. She also recently learned the word "binky", and now whenever she hears the word she goes running gleefully to her crib where we keep them during the day. I've also had zero luck introducing a lovey. This is going to be tough!
When are you thinking of starting to pacifier wean?

My daughter turns 2 next month and still sucks her thumb when she goes to sleep, which I'm okay with for now. But one month ago I started introducing a lovey to her (a blanket and a soft toy). When I put her down in her bed, she takes the blanket in one arm, the toy in the other, and my hope is that soon she will learn to put herself to sleep using those rather than her thumb.

@Freckles: I have heard of these before, mabye I'll give them a try.
@skibobrown: I wanted to have him pacifier weened before 2, I think. He's 13 months now. When he throws all his pacis on the floor in the middle of the night I need to scrounge around and fine at least two, one for his mouth and at least one to hold. A stuffed animal would be much easier to find in the dark.
@Rubies: He never really sucked on his thumb. I've heard some horror stories about trying to thumb ween, so I'm glad. Good Luck!

@kiddosc: She started off sucking on the little knots/tags on the lovey, and now she sucks her fingers and just holds the lovey (she strokes the little tags. too cute). I don't forsee her weaning from finger sucking though!!

We have had some luck with this...
I started giving her the blanket with aniimal head to hold while we nursed and rocked to sleep around a year. She didnt get super attached but accepted it. Then she started liking elmo and my parents sent her a little stuffed elmo as a gift around 16 months. She loves loves loves it! She now sleeps with both elmo and the lion blanket and elmo even came on the plane with us recently.
I donnt know if this will work for you but i wanted to share that it is possible. The elmo was i think the 'take along buddy' and it is the perfect size for a toddler.

I've heard some suggestions involving keeping whatever item you want to use as a lovey in your shirt for a few days, so it smells like you (even better if breastfeeding). Don't know if it would help as a replacement, but it might help little?

I feel like it is harder to get them super attached to something else at that point but the one time I had success we had a full blown plan. We had several of the same lovey and anytime she was looking sleepy and would start to drift off we would tuck one in with her, we put one in the carrier when we wore her and it was always handy for the stroller and car seat. Once she associated it with really calm times we would give it to her in the car and as she got over a meltdown. Basically, we made sure it was almost constantly with her and then backed off and made it just for sleep and high stress times.
I would say the whole process took two months. She still uses the lovey at 2 but she isn't as obsessed as some kids can be.

The closest C has to a lovey is the Leap Frog Scout dog, he got it for his first birthday. He uses him to go to sleep for naps and at night. He pushes the buttons and ends up cuddling him to fall asleep. Other than that nothing else has worked, he's not interested in dolls, rarely blankets, and not even pacifiers or thumb sucking.

DS was the opposite. He refused any sort of lovely for his first 15 months or so. Then, we knew we needed some "transition" items so I bought him a bear and we also got the AA security blankets. He really liked them all from the get go, so when he started daycare at 2 years old, he was able to take them with him and have a sense of security and familiarity. He also likes to sleep with them. Luckily, he doesn't need them all of the time, so we can definitely leave the house without them.

I just read that between 1 and 3 is the peak and most normal time for kids to develop a relationship with a transitional object, so I wouldn't worry too much. Give him options and he'll probably pick something -- and not necessarily why you want hahaha. My son rotates his transitional objects. For the past few nights he's been sleeping with a McDonald's toy. Egads!

My oldest didn't get attached to her jellycat until about 2.5 years old. We just kept presenting it.
