Any mamas (or hopeful mamas) of African-American/biracial LOs on here?

@Mrs. Polish: I would try just wetting it thoroughly? LO has straight hair in the back because she lays on it but when it's wet it curls uniformly. I am no expert though...

While this thread is back up, my LO's skin is SO dry right now. We do Burt's Bees lotion twice a day & I put pure shea butter on the flakiest areas but she still is so dry

@daniellemybelle: H has some dry patches too, and I've been putting Nivea on them. It seems to help. I've go to find some new shampoo for her though, her hair is SO dry and fuzzy.

@daniellemybelle: My mom used cocoa butter on us. Pure cocoa butter that comes out in a push up fashion and cocoa butter Iinfused lotion.

@daniellemybelle: ditto @avivoca: with Nivea. We have the thick cream that comes in a tub. It's so thick it's hard to spread on, but it keeps him from getting dry.

It's a bath night so I will wet it then. I'm sure that's what he needs. Thanks

@Mrs. Polish: Yep, just wet it.

@daniellemybelle: I'm surprised the pure Shea butter isn't working. LO has super dry legs and we only use pure Shea butter (2x a day) on her and it's helped so much so that DH, who has psoriasis and eczema, has started using it.

Thanks for these tips, ladies. Our heat is absolutely awful and so drying. We are in the process of getting another humidifier for our living room. I've been seeing dry patches on LO's face, but I need to stock up on cocoa butter.

@daniellemybelle: I will definitely be getting some conditioner, too!

  8. daniellemybelle

    cantaloupe / 6669 posts

@mrsjazz: It works better than coconut oil but the flakiness comes back within a few hours. The worst area is her forehead - it is so scaly

    @BKCaribBaby: I hadn't thought about a humidifier! That's a good idea.

@avivoca: What shampoo are you using? I like California Baby although I haven't washed her hair in nearly 2 weeks.

I am going to try the Nivea cream & cocoa butter!

Also, I use a store cheap coconut oil on his hair. We're getting low and before I get more was wondering, is all coconut oil created equal? If not, can you recommend one I should try? Thank you ladies.

Bumping this thread because I am struggling a little with LO's hair. I love it so much but the back is getting so super dry & coarse. I use a TON of Shea Moisture conditioner on it as well as a bunch of coconut oil & it just seems unhealthy compared to the rest of her hair which is soft tight ringlets. It's also really short in that spot & I worry it's breaking Any tips?

@Mrs. Polish: I never saw this but we use organic coconut oil from Whole Foods but I don't think it really matters for hair & skin!

@daniellemybelle: Is that area one that she sleeps on? Does she rub her head back and forth when she sleeps? That could be a source of breakage as well. How often are you detangling?

My LO has some sections on her crown and in the back that are a bit coarser than the rest and those are the areas to treat very gently. Lots of water, oil, conditioner. There's this Shea Moisture detangler that is really awesome, it's so slick and I use this in that section of my LO's hair often.

I've been telling DH that I need to create some kind of baby head scarf, haha. That would really help keep that area moisturized.

@daniellemybelle: we have the same issue on the back of his head. It has definitely gotten better since he started sitting on his own instead of laying so much. Lo used to do a Stevie Wonder in his sleep and had a reverse horseshoe for the longest.

  13. daniellemybelle

    cantaloupe / 6669 posts

@Mrs. Polish: LOL - Stevie Wonder! She totally does that.

@mrsjazz: Yep, she rubs her head in her crib (a la Stevie Wonder as Mrs Polish put it). I really do want to put a head scarf on her! I am going to Google it.

Is the detangler you use for kids? I usually detangle with just water & coconut oil. I comb her hair every night before bed & most mornings.

I have been conditioning it pretty much every bath so it gets wet every night (only wash 1x/week). Should I not get it wet so often?

I found baby sleep caps online! They are called Silky Wraps

Hey @mrsjazz: Was it you that said you use regular Shea Moisture on your LO? I have been using Shea Moisture shampoo & conditioner on LO as well as myself for a while now... but I am having a moment that maybe I shouldn't? But I keep reading the labels & it seems totally baby safe.

Oh, and just a hair update while I'm here: LO's hair is getting insanely long! It's so fun to do stuff with. I spend a lot of time detangling & moisturizing though. I am interested in what her final texture will be - it is getting more kinky every day!

  16. mrsjazz

    coconut / 8234 posts

@daniellemybelle: I do use the regular stuff. At first I was unsure but I read the label and it seemed similar to the baby/kids stuff! I'm still using California Baby for washing her hair just because we were gifted a ton of it. But I use Shea Moisture detangler and Hair Milk on LO.

  17. daniellemybelle

    cantaloupe / 6669 posts

@mrsjazz: Good to know! Right now I am still only using coconut oil for styling, or occasionally the Noodle & Boo detangler that I have which is just okay. I washed my own hair with California Baby & found it pretty drying so that's when I started using my Shea Moisture shampoo & conditioner on her.

@daniellemybelle: @mrsjazz: we've been getting lots of comments lately about cutting Zay's hair. He's 14mo, and I hadn't planned on getting it cut, but people we know are giving us phone numbers for barbers. Do we NEEDto get his hair cut or is it a personal preference? I don't want him to look bad because he has white parents, but I don't see anything wrong with his hair now.

  19. mrsjazz

    coconut / 8234 posts

@Mrs. Polish: No you don't need to cut his hair! Definitely a personal preference. My friend has two sons who have the biggest curly afros. She recently cut them because she thought it was too much work, but don't feel pressured!

    @plantains: @mrsjazz: @Mrs. Polish: @BKCaribBaby: @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: @avivoca: Okay I need to revive this thread!

LO has LONG hair! So we do pigtails/Afro puffs or just a pony-puff some days. It's cute & I don't have to wet & detangle her whole head for it to look good.

But is it okay to brush her hair dry? We have been using a Tangle Teezer. I don't do enough to fully detangle - it's just quick brushing to get her pig/ponytails neat & smooth. Lately I have noticed some fuzzies around her temple which I think are breakage. Is from brushing dry or just pulling her hair back?

I don't think I can wet, moisturize, and detangle every single day. It takes so long! I think I need to think about some protective styles... But I love her curls & don't want to "put them away"!

  24. mrsjazz

    coconut / 8234 posts

@daniellemybelle: What's your daughter's hair type again? The pulling back and putting into ponytails could be the cause of the breakage. LO started experiencing a little breakage from us pulling her hair back with headbands so I try not to brush her hair back anymore.

I don't brush or comb LO's hair dry at all, but she has type 4 hair like me, so it's so easy for our hair to break. I always make sure it's properly moisturized and re-wet it with water when I need to brush her hair.

My niece and nephews are mixed - my niece got the African American type of hair, my sister has worked with her to control the adorable puff with leave in conditioners. She knows how to take care of it now (14 y/o) and gets it straightened at the hairdresser for special occasions sometimes.

Both boys got much softer hair, more like my fathers (fully white), and their dad cuts it short like he does his. When they let it grow out it's beautiful soft curls

  26. daniellemybelle

    cantaloupe / 6669 posts

@mrsjazz: Her hair is 3c. Maybe a little 4a in the back but it's just drier/coarser where she lays on it. BTW - do you put a silk cap on your LO or pin a silk scarf on her car seat, anything like that?

I know the ponytails are not great for avoiding breakage but they are such an easy cute hair style!

Is it okay to brush type 3 hair dry at all? Right now the two options I have with her hair are to not do anything to it except a dab of coconut oil and ponytails, OR to do her whole wet/moisturize/detangle routine. Her morning bedhead is too crazy to just wear "out" and if I do wet it, I have to go ahead & do the whole routine. Her curls get uneven & tangled if I don't moisturize & comb them out after wetting. She has so much hair that requires sectioning it, and wrestling her!

Do you have any suggestions for other styles?

@babycanuck: Interesting how genetics work themselves out! Right now LO's hair is smack dab between my texture & DH's. His hair is the kinkiest possible. We'll see what it's like when she grows up though. Hair can change a lot after puberty!

@daniellemybelle: It's funny because my sister has super thick curly hair, and none of the kids got her texture. The boys totally have my dad's hair, and the girl has her other aunt's. My brother in law, though he's black, has quite soft hair with a swirl on the back of his head!

@daniellemybelle: Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't brush hair completely dry. That causes hair breakage leading to split ends and shedding. My stylist told me when detangling full length strands shedding is desired. Hair should break off from the root not split off along the hair shaft.

Does your LO'S hair go from individual curly spirals to one big spiral/ curl once brushed into pig tails? With that soft texture I would detangle, when damp, with a paddle brush like Conair or a wide tooth comb. Even without completely wetting her hair, a little water spritz to make it damp goes a long way for safe and painless detangling. Remember to work your way up from the end to the scalp.

To address the edges, I would try using hair wax http://www.amazon.com/TIGI-Head-Stick-semi-matte-finish/dp/B0010NRXYM in conjuction with the brush. Brush the hair into the desired pony, but don't spend an excessive amount of time making sure the hair is slick. Then, add a glide or two of the wax followed by the super soft boar brush. This technique works for me big time.

@daniellemybelle: One day my kid will wear a satin sleep cap or scarf, but for now, no. I'm thinking of getting some satin pillow cases to help. We just have to deal with the dryness every morning.

What kind of brush do you use? I'd use a very soft bristled brush, maybe even a baby brush. I second what @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: about not having to do the entire process, but just using a spray bottle and spritzing her hair.

@daniellemybelle: @mrsjazz: I don't know hair styles, but I never brush Zay's hair dry. I'm having a hard time now with the knots in it because he hates when I comb it and we both get frustrated. I think I need to take him to get it trimmed, but honestly, I'm embarrassed at what they'll think of how I've taken care of it.

  31. daniellemybelle

    cantaloupe / 6669 posts

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: When we do ponytails, her curls don't go into one big spiral, but that's likely because I don't brush all the way through - just at the roots to smooth.

Is wax okay for baby hair? I feel like that would build up...

@mrsjazz: So I have a wide tooth comb, a boar bristle brush and a Tangle Teezer. The Tangle Teezer is like a plastic brush - it looks like a dog brush! But it has great reviews for textured hair and it's been working really well for detangling. I have been using it instead of the bristle brush for ponytails (dry) but maybe I shouldn't.

Y'all, I have tried the spray bottle spritz thing for "next day" hair and it doesn't work! I have to get it soaking wet, oil it and totally detangle it or it just looks bad. A small amount of moisture makes it frizzy and the curls get uneven and matted looking if I don't comb them out.

Today I did wet it all the way but I just finger combed with Shea Moisture product and it turned out pretty good, though the back was still a little crazy... and she still screamed and tried to get away

@Mrs. Polish: I am constantly paranoid I am bad at hair, so I'm with you. Though my MIL & SILs are always saying they love LO's "afro" and seem not to like when I "do" her hair so maybe I am overthinking it.

  32. Mrs. Lemon-Lime

    wonderful pea / 17279 posts

@daniellemybelle: The wax is very lightweight. The only times I have had build up to the point where some would fleck off is when I would add to it days on end and was heavy handed with the application to begin with. To remedy that I take a damp washcloth and brush the product off before placing more on.

At night, how do you prepare her hair for bed? I have found sectioning my hair into 6-8 twists works well when trying to preserve a curly style multiple days in a row. To keep the ends together I use the ouch less hairbands. In the morning, I finger fluff out the twists and add a little product to give it sheen and keep the frizz away.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I tried big twists tonight on your recommendation. Normally I don't do anything before bed! Thanks for the tips!

@daniellemybelle: did the big twists help?

DD's hair is growing slowly but surely haha. It is 3a/3b on most of her head, but then the sides are almost bone straight. It is also pretty fine and prone to dryness so I'm still figuring things out. I haven't tried a silk cap at night because I'm pretty sure she will take it off. (She takes all her hair bands off). I have recently however started doing a few braids which look good, bit because her hair is fine, it doesn't hold a style for very long. I think as she gets older and the hair grows, our styling options should improve, but for now the braids last about 3 or 4 days and then I leave it loose the rest of the week.

    @daniellemybelle: did that help?

@plantains: such a cutie! My mom had super fine hair like your description of your LOs'. She used to tell me in the 70s she had to be very careful with her afro because if someone blew on it or breathed to hard it would deflate lol.

@Mrs. Polish: don't be embarassed, so what if they look at you sideways? Get your son a cut and make him look extra handsome. How old is he now? My bro rocked braids until he was two, but alot of my friend's cut their son's hair around 1.

@Mrs. Polish: Your LO's hair is gorgeous! I may get Sadie a tiny trim soon. The ends feel dry.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: @plantains: Twists didn't help! I like her bedhead better I think we are going to try a satin sheet though it's not too cozy for cold weather...

@plantains: What a cutie patootie! LO could definitely wear braids like that - her hair is sooo long and thick enough to hold them - but I am afraid to do it & make it look dumb

@daniellemybelle: awe man! The satin pillowcase will efinitely help with breakage.
