The "how often do you shampoo your LO" thread made me think of this. I'm half white, half Cuban and DH is African-American, so I'm 99% sure that our LOs will have very ethnic hair that will require me to learn a LOT, especially if we have a little girl! I confess that I have watched Youtube videos of mamas styling their little girl's hair and already have ideas of cute hairstyles I will want to do! Anyone else in a similar situation?

Well, I am native american, hubs is white and we both have crazy hair so naturally our daughter ended up with wild hair. I am so going to have to look up youtube videos because I have no clue how to do her hair.

My good friend is Irish/Italian and married an African American. Both of her kids do not have ethnic hair ... they have her hair so I guess she doesn't have to worry about how to take care of it!

@daniellemybelle: Well, I'm black and DH is 1/2 Polish, 1/4 Japanese and 1/4 Taiwanese. We are expecting a girl in June and I'm interested to see how the hair thing turns out. I know how to look after my own hair which is pretty kinky, so I guess that helps but I have no idea how different LO's will be. Will it be easier or harder? Who knows.

Timely thread for me!
We are struggling to get our wash regimen right at this point. We dealt with a lot of "ashy" skin at first. Now after each wash, we use coconut oil and it seems to help tremendously. After our baths, her hair is a little dry but it rapidly gets oily. We bathe every 2-3 days and wash hair every 3 days... and that seems to be keeping the dry skin away.
Though our little one is asian, black, native and white, her skin type is mostly AA and her hair is, well I don't know what yet!

I'm Black and I was so happy to find out that I was having a little girl because I can't wait to do her hair. But I don't have a learning curve as my hair has been natural for about 12 years and my LO won't be biracial, so she'll probably have hair like mine.
I really enjoy this website: Beads, Braids, and Beyond, which she started as she learned how to do her biracial daughter's hair. The mother does so many cute styles, but she also has various photos and styles of little girls (biracial and African-American) with varying textures.

@Andrea: How funny! Usually those kinky hair genes are pretty dominant. My hair is already fairly coarse and wavy/curly so I would be very surprised if our kids don't have super curly or kinky hair. I hope they do!
@Mrs. Jacks: Coconut oil is awesome for skin and hair! What do you use to wash her hair? If you are having problems with it being dry but getting oily, I would look into co-washing, or washing with conditioner. I don't do it but I have heard of lots of folks who say that it really balances the oil production. It's also is great for encouraging curl pattern, which could be good for Little Jacks as her hair grows into its own!

@daniellemybelle: I wonder why. I tried to investigate last night and all I could find were her tweets. One was a link to an anti-Pinterest site and one was a comment about how she wants something different for her girls.

I have a daughter and I wash her hair probably twice a week. She's whole African American (immediately anyway,LOL). I comb and plait it everyday and plan to use Miss Jessie's when she get's older. I use it on my hair, since I'm natural.
My cousin's wife is Mexican and their daughter's hair is like her. I think Mexicans have stronger genes than black people because it's usally the other way around.

Though my Cuban background has some African heritage, so I'm still pretty convinced my kids will have AA hair.

My daughter is bi-racial. I am Italian, my husband is African American. My daughter has a lot of hair, she was born with it. But it's really thin and easy to comb through. I might not have to use many products to keep it tame. We have a niece though, who is also bi-racial and she has a tough time managing her hair. She's nine now and can't wait until her mother will let her go to a salon to use a relaxer.

@daniellemybelle: Right now Maisie's hair is so interesting... It's like the Black genes are fighting with the Asian/Native genes. So each hair is straight, with almost a crimped look to it when it gets wet. There is obviously some wave to it and when it's wet fine hairs get kinky.... but basically it's not straightforward at all!

I understand why she would want her hair straight so it's less of a hassle, but relaxers are so damaging! I think I'm going to be that mean mama that forbids relaxers until she's in high school... at the earliest. I don't want my babies pouring lye on their tender scalps!

@BabyLove: There are so many websites out there that can teach her how to manage her hair. When I went natural, I had to learn how to take care of my hair since my mom relaxed my hair at a young age. I learned online! Another good website that has how-tos is "Black Girl Long Hair http://blackgirllonghair.com/--which may help your niece.

@mrsjazz: @Mrs. Jacks: I definitely will encourage our girl(s) if we have any to embrace their natural hair. I can't say that I would totally forbid relaxers until they are on their own because I have black friends who seriously warred with their hair in high school and struggled with self-esteem because of it. I mean, I just have slightly curly hair, and I flat ironed every day in high school to fit in. If our daughter was picked on or something for her natural hair, I'd like to say I'd try to help her rise above it and be proud of her natural beauty, but I know how much your peers affect you as a teenager, so that might sway me.

I'm bumping this thread because over a year later, I now have my curly headed baby girl! What do you all do for hair care? Right now we shampoo about 2x a week with California Baby, and I just started using CB conditioner each bath, even when we don't shampoo, since I am noticing more texture. I have a leave in conditioner by Noodle & Boo I'm using as well for bed head. She has the most gorgeous ringlets when her hair is wet but when it dries & she rolls around on it, it gets so crazy! I want to preserve the curls without using too much product... I might try a tiny dab of coconut oil.

@daniellemybelle: I finally think I have a good grasp on taking care of DS hair. I was terrified at first (dh and I are both white, lo is black) but now I find myself wanting a girl to do hair with.
I use coconut oil on los hair. And I only shampoo once every week to a week and a half.

@daniellemybelle: Right now we don't shampoo. I haven't found one I like that doesn't dry her hair out. We no-poo instead, basically just using conditioner. We wash her hair 1x a week (unless she put food in her hair during dinner). We use California Baby Shampoo. I use Shea Moisture products in my own hair and read the ingredients and they are safe for LO so I use their leave-in extra moisture detangler (with sea kelp, shea butter, and argan oil) in her hair quite a few times a week to refresh her hair. It's awesome stuff. We don't use coconut oil in her hair when it's cold out, I've been using jojoba or a little bit of olive oil.
Her hair still looks a bit crazy after a nap and when she wakes up, though!

Me!!! I'm African-American with a tight curl pattern natural hair, and husband is Caucasian with straight hair (hair stylists always ask him if he is Asian because he has very bone straight jet black hair). Our LOs will have very ethnic hair. There are many different products, and not all products work for all hair. The key is finding what products work best for what curl patterns. The thick products I use in my hair probably won't work in our lo's hair, b/c he or she will have a looser curl pattern than I will. I hear Mixed Chicks is nice, but I don't want to use that brand on principle. Just me though. I use Miss Jessie's or Kinky-Curly on my tight curls. My friend loves Curl Junkie on her tresses, and she has a looser pattern. Man, I could go on and on. I'm really into hair!

I'm interested to know too. I'm half black/half white and my husband is white. I've noticed that Hyla's hair is getting dry and coarse with every bath, so I need to find something other than J&J for her.

I read that any oils that harden in the cold are no bueno to use during the winter...even though the amount used in the hair is minimal, if it hardens in the container, it will harden in the hair, too. I love the Shea Moisture line (for both me and LO) because their products are mostly organic and natural AND you can get it at Target (not expensive!)

My LOs will have ethnic textured hair like mine. When I wear my hair curly I use Miss Jessie's Super Sweetback Treatment for a leave-in/rinse treatment every 2-3 weeks. I also like Miss Jessie's Quick Curls for daily styling. Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie works really nice for daily styling too- my husband uses this all the time. To refresh day or couples' day old hair we use Shea Moisture Hold & Shine Moisture Mist.
I grew up using Mane & Tail shampoo and conditioner. I still love it. One thing my stylist puts on my hair to prevent itchy scalp and breakage is tonic after washing it.
ETA: co-signing on Mrs. Jazz about the costs. Miss Jessie's Quick Curls is $34 a tube compared to Shea Moisture at $10 a tub I believe. I wait for the Miss Jessie 50% off sales at Target.

Aannndd...subscribing. I'm a Black Mom with a biracial DD. She has very little bone straight (with a tendency to curl when wet) hair so far. I find that many baby bath gel-shampoo combos tend to dry out her hair. I don't wash it very much right now since she has very little hair to deal ith. Her hair will be a learning experience for me as I have very tightly coil hair that has been in locs for almost 10 years now. I have no idea how I'm going to navigate this. Wish me luck!

Instead of starting a new thread I figured I'd just ask here. Lo woke up with a patch of straight hair. I'm sure it's how he slept, but I'm not sure what to do with it. It is very dry and we have low humidity here right now, but I'm keeping coconut oil on his hair (we rarely go outside in this cold). Should I just try washing his hair to see if it curls back up?
