I was home with LO this weekend when the power went out for the first time in our new home. It was in pitch blackness that I realized I don't know where anything is in our house since I didn't unpack it. Not wanting to be caught as off guard for a real emergency, I'm finally putting together an earthquake/emergency kit.
What essential items are in yours? Any product recommendations?

We dont have a kit, I keep forgetting to make one.
Backpack (to put everything in)
flash light
extra batteries
energy bars
bottled water
extra clothes
cash
telephone (that doesnt use electricity- I happened to keep one when we had a black out in NYC and was able to make phone calls)
solar charger
first aid kit (band aids, wound cleaner, dressing)
scissors
can opener
matches
candles

If you are in an area that loses power a lot I would suggest a generator.
We usually lose power 1-2 times a year in the winter and having a generator is so nice to have!!

One thing that a lot of people don't think of...make sure all your contacts for important people are written down and/or printed out. What if you can't use your cell phone or it loses power and you can't charge it but you need to call someone?

@Mamaof2: We're not in an area that frequently loses power. Someone drove into the power pole in our neighborhood.

Costco sells emergency preparedness kits.

That's a good place to start and at least get some ideas. I live in earthquake territory, and just generally fear disasters of all kinds.

@MrsMcD: I bought a food kit from Costco. Then I got some water packets and dog food kits from Amazon. I have some wind-up emergency flashlight and radio units that I picked up on Woot.
We live near an 'active' volcano and also in an area where earthquakes can happen. Lived in the PNW for 5 years and have luckily never had to deal with any emergencies like that. While my family on the east coast, felt that tiny earthquake a few years ago. I joke that they got to feel an earthquake before me.

The website http://www.ready.gov has a lot of good info. I really need to work on our kit, we have a half-assed one in our house and I have an emergency bag with diapers, wipes, some formula in case I'm not around to breastfeed, water, and jarred food for DD in the car. But it's definitely not up to the standard it should be for the area we live in.
