I'm afraid of football because of injuries! Are there any sports you want your LO to avoid?

I really dislike sports but would probably be supportive of anything... though I hope she is more into hiking climbing and yoga like me

Rugby, for the same reason you listed. Many of DH's family are very involved in rugby but luckily DH feels the same way as me, It would TERRIFY me considering some of the stories DH has told me about when he played!

We're having a girl so this won't really be an issue… but football makes us both a bit nervous due to the spine injury issue (although I don't know for sure we'd disallow it if our LO was dead set on it). For our girl I don't think we'll ban anything but I would rather she do something like soccer or softball or basketball rather than something like gymnastics or dance or cheerleading (I feel like the latter have more body image issues/demands to be "skinny" rather than strong/fit, although that's obviously not true of everyone who participates in them).

Football. I'm scared of all of the stories I've read in recent years about middle school kids getting concussed!
Hockey, although one of E's aunts could have made the Women's Olympic Hockey team...sometime in the mid-90s I guess? She injured her back badly before qualifiers (or whatever it's called).
D wants to encourage track/cross country and baseball.

Pretty much all highly physical full contact sports.
I'm hoping she will play sports like tennis, golf and volleyball.

Football. Rugby and hockey are also on the list but not as high. Plus, I hate watching it. From that perspective I have to say softball wouldn't be my cup of tea either, it would be harder for me to enjoy sitting through hours and hours of games.

@Mae: I know a lot of cheerleaders who have had injuries!! One girl I know though didn't have the typical thin body, she was more athletically built and she made a great base. I think the body image/issues is more associated with the flyers because you have to be tiny for that spot on the team.
I would be nervous about football, and I also don't find it all that interesting. I don't enjoy watching baseball but I wouldn't mind if he plays it.
I love soccer though - but I know there are tons of injuries there too!

We were just talking about this the other day... We don't really want them to be very good at any sports! I mean, we'll put them in sports when they are little, but we'd be fine if they are into less competitive/dangerous/physical things by the time they get to high school. It just seems like sports at that level come with a lot of stress for kids and we'd rather emphasize school work at that point in their lives.

@Mrs. Pen: I'm not all that worried about broken arms and legs. I mean, it would suck if it happened but it's a risk I'd let them take if they wanted to, and they heal. The spinal injuries are what really worry me because they can't be fixed! A guy from my hs took a bad hit in football and broke his neck and it really freaked me out!

@twodoghouse: Agree! We definitely won't push sports at all. I did all the peewee stuff but was done by the time I was in middle school. Same with my husband. We're not athletic people really so our kid(s) participating in sports is not important to me.

@Mae: we're not very athletic people either so I would be surprised if our kids were like super athletes anyway!

I am afraid of football too! And, not a huge fan of cheerleading… I would love if they learned tennis!

Football, hockey, and anything extreme like free climbing (with no harness or anything). I'd prefer he stick to things like soccer and swimming!

My husband is an ex-football player and he is dying for our future kid to play football!!
He also would like them to play golf or baseball.
There's nothing we're against. Sure, football is someone dangerous, but so is crossing the street

Soccer. I haaaaaaate it. Basketball too. They are terribly boring.

Football. The brain injuries are not worth it. Plus, I'm just not a football fan.

We would strongly discourage American football and boxing because of risk of traumatic brain injury/death.
That's all I can think of. I'm sure I'll be terrified if he takes on extreme sports, etc. but I just hope he'll make smart choices.

Football, because I'm scared of the injuries and I really hate football. Hockey, again I'm scared of the injuries and hockey takes up so much time!

football and wrestling, even tho DH was a serious wrestler... i don't like the high contact and concussion injury stats
pomegranate / 3983 posts
We've talked about this and will not be allowing football. I will also discourage headers in soccer and boxing.
pomelo / 5509 posts
Football for sure, way too many "missed" concussions and brain injuries. Same with boxing. I wouldn't be thrilled with hockey either. I think anything else would be fair game.
We will strongly encourage participation in at least one sport up through high school. I think it adds a different level of dedication and teaches teamwork, as well as keeping kids active, which can set them up for a healthy lifestyle. It's just another aspect of being well-rounded, in my opinion.

Football and cheerleading because the governing bodies aren't strong or cohesive enough to address injury issues. Any sport in which I find that to be the case. As a gymnastics and Crossfit coach I am very very very extremely picky about the programs he does. So it's more individual activities than whole sports based on the program as I learn about it.

Football and softball/baseball (I feel like it makes you lopsided).
pineapple / 12566 posts
Luckily, there is no American football here to worry about. No rugby or hockey.

@Mae: we had 2 female football players on our team in high school!
Honestly.... None? I don't like sports. If they want to, I'll support it. But it's not something I'm going to be pushing them to do. Unless you're counting gymnastics, I plan to sign her up for gymnastics/dance.

I'd discourage football and hockey. Hockey more because of the time and expense.
I was a swimmer, and I think that's a great sport. Gymnastics might be nice, too, but with her genes she'd probably be too tall to do it at a high level later on. Baseball, soccer, basketball, and track would all be fine.
pomelo / 5524 posts
I'm a little nervous about football just b/c of how injury prone it is, but I don't want to discourage any organized sport.
honeydew / 7091 posts
I'd honestly be happy if they didn't want to participate in any competitive sports. I will encourage being active, but I certainly won't push organized sports.
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
I agree with others -- definitely football. It can be so dangerous. The risk is just not worth it to me.
