I just started doing this about 4 days ago instead of my normal routine, and WOOOOOOWWW. I seriously feel great. I looked different today when I took off towel after my shower. Thank you, HIIT

Yes! That's literally how I lost all my baby weight! And there was 70 lbs of that!

@luckypenny: I believe it! Only on my 5th day and I feel 10x more right, stressed and exhausted than I have felt doing my normal routine.
What were you intervals like?
I am doing treadmill 30/90s 30 at 8mph and then 90s break at 3mph for 30mins.

Yes! I love it and it is so much more fun for me mentally than just all one speed. Plus i can spend less time on the tredmill in general. And yeah mega fat loss
grapefruit / 4582 posts
A lot of my workouts looked like this but I'd also substitute wall balls, sprints, or squats

High intensity interval training. Perfect for fat loss!
I hate it but I love it
coconut / 8475 posts
@Smurfette: basically, you go HARD for say...45 seconds...and then rest or do low intensity for say..90s. And repeat. For 15..20..30mins. It burns fat. Apparently, just sheds it. It is 6x more effective (they say) than just steady working out. High- intensity- interval- training, baby...
@Dapple Grey: @luckypenny: @blackbird: this makes me excited to keep going!
I want to be a solid 10lb under my PP weight, so I can get pregnant again in the fall and have room to spare;) I only have 5 more pounds to lose, but I have hit a plateau for the last 2 months. This will kick my behind!

I was doing HIIT classes right before I got pregnant with #2 and I was dropping weight fast and I could literally feel the difference after the workouts! They're my favorite!
pineapple / 12234 posts
I did them before baby #2 and kind of forgot how much I loved it. I HATE spending hours at the gym...it's so boring! HIIT is much more my style (I love pushing my limits too).

Oooh I need to get rid of my last 10lb or so in 6 weeks before I face our families and friends in England and this sounds like the answer. Does anyone mind sharing their workout schedule? The one they started out doing rather than worked up to.... Thank you, my baby belly is already grateful

@travelgirl1: I only do the treadmill for now, although people usually incorporate push ups, kettle balls and many other things Ito the workout. I am a beginner by all meanings of beginner! I listed my routine up top. Basically, I run for 90s at 3mph. Then, I push the 8mph button and go for 30s. I repeat this 2min drill 10x and I go for 20mins.
When I increase it, I'll go to 9mph or I'll go for 45s instead of 30s, so I'll go for 30m instead of 20. You can mini pulsate it, but for best results, up your high speed and lower your resting time. You don't necessarily ever have to put in more than 20min. I incorporate a 30 min stroller walk with my son and some floor, an work.

@TurtleDoves: Perfect, thank you. I think I'll try doing it on the cross trainer and see how I get on. Thank you

So after seeing this thread I went to pinterest and searched "HIIT". I just did this workout: http://pinterest.com/pin/147281850286794909/
Only 20 minutes but I'm sweaty and tired!! Loveeee! Going to try to find more and do it 4-5 times a week. I think I can commit to 20 mins a day!
Thanks @TurtleDoves!

@TurtleDoves: Just did your treadmill workout this morning and it kicked my butt. It's tough, but I love being in and out of the gym in no time at all. Thanks!

@Mrs. Pen: @plantains: do it!!! I'm pairing it up with a loose paleo diet and OMG...I'm not kidding, I feel tight and flat and just...not bloated. I am done with a full week's worth on Thursday (tomorrow) and I look good already (like I see a difference).
@meredithNYC: go you! Today I did it twice. Once before LO woke up an once during his nap. So, 40mins total and I feel great!
grapefruit / 4671 posts
@TurtleDoves: wow, in a week?! This sounds amazing. I need to get off my but and just dive in.
What sort of meals are you eating as part of your loose paleo diet?
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
HIIT and paleo go hand in hand...paleo is big at crossfit gyms because it allows athletes to perform better. More energy, less fat, more lean muscle, etc. combined with HIIT, it's a super fat burner
I've been doing mostly grilled meats and vegetables or a salad for dinner. Eggs, avocado, and bacon for breakfast, sweet potatoes and leftovers for lunch....I rarely snack because I'm never hungry aside from meal times! I'm down at least 12 pounds in 3 weeks.
The combo is way effective!
coconut / 8475 posts
@plantains: I follow paleo pretty closely but, I will "cheat" by having coffee and flavored creamer- because I would just be plain miserable without. Also- if I am out (dinner party) and I cannot god anything paleo to eat, then I'll cheat, but I'll cheat in extreme moderation. I am making paleo a lifestyle, so I have modified it, ever so slightly, to make it doable in the long run. I love gettin my grill out, making omlettes, drinking pure fruit and ice smoothies, and making veggie packed salads.
My weight in is tomorrow. I haven't eaten well this week and I've only been doing 20 mins of HIIT a day...but I swear, the paleo & HIIT combo has done something. The #s will tell tomorrow AM!

@blackbird: how soon PP did you start? Did you do anything while pregnant? I really want to keep HIIT going with pregnancy. We'll have to see what my OB says, but here is a lady who did HIIT while pregnant. She looked awesome and awesome a few days pp : http://mizzfit.com/baby-bump-fit-tips/view/34-weeks-pregnant-and-im-still-high-intensity-interval-training/

I definitely whip out the HIIT routines when I hit a plateau and it does work. I'm an exercise fiend so it takes something drastic for me to see a noticeable difference. I can get caught up in the long distance runs and what not...but your body so gets used to it and it doesn't do squat! When I get to that point, it's all HIIT and weight training. I go through cycles though. However, you won't notice a difference with HIIT if you aren't eating clean and healthily! Exercise alone does very little (unless you have a lot of excess weight) - it's mostly about what you feed your body..

@TurtleDoves: I'm totally going to attempt your HIIT running plan this week. So if my doctor oks it, it's fine to still run if I ever get pregnant? Awesome!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@turtledoves, I did crossfit until I was 38 weeks pregnant and did barre classes 6-10 weeks postpartum, then started back at crossfit. I was in good shape before I got pregnant and its just slowly gone downhill over the last year thankfully more see are getting away from the "stop working out and just stretch and swim" mentality for those of us who want to do more.

Today's weigh I :
-2.6lbs in only 7 days (of beginner's hiit and loose paleo)
I can't wait to keep doing this all summer and add more time & weights!

@TurtleDoves: so I got my lardy ass on the cross trainer to do 20 mins of this and it felt great, but omg did I feel bad 5 minutes later. There is no way I could do this daily as I'm still breastfeeding but am aiming for every other day. *hopefully* I'll see a difference in time for Spain nex month
coconut / 8475 posts
@travelgirl1: or you could do 7mph instead of the 8mph or 15m instead of 20. I love that it so easy to scale down or fire up depending on the person's needs. I've been doing 7mph the last 3 days. I'm on my period and my energy is just: zapped:'(

@MsMamaBear: story.of.my.life.
I work my butt off in the gym, then I go have a large latte with whipped cream from Starbucks. Wtf is wrong with me?
Like I mentioned above, I am really trying to make Paleo my lifestyle, so far I am doing well. I could do much better!

Here's a good HIIT routine I'm doing these days:
- Warmup (2 minutes)
- Run at 6.5 speed on 6.5 incline (10 minutes)
- Sprint at 9-9.3 speed 1 minute, then walk at 3.5 speed for 1 minute (alternate for 10 minutes)
- Run at 6.5 speed on 6.5 incline (5 minutes)
- cool down (3 minutes)
30 minutes of HIIT cardio 4x week or less if I'm doing the long distance runs also. So effective and such a time saver.

I did HIIT on the treadmill a few years ago in college to get ready for spring break and I saw a lot of results in how my clothes fit! Now I rejoined the gym after getting inspired by this thread and am easing back into HIIT. I did 60s/60s of 7.0 and 2.5 but I am going to work into something more like @turtledoves listed above. I'm excited!!!

@Boopers: good for you! You will inspire me to continue. I got off the wagon for 2-3 days but I got back on last night and actually, right now it's 11pm and I just finished my training for tonight too. I feel good so far!

YAY! We can help keep each other accountable I plan on heading to the gym tomorrow and getting a workout in. I hadn't ran in a long time and my whole body was sore from doing one HIIT workout. I love that feeling!
