I think I am a super commuter...I do a long distance commute max 2 days a week that crosses three states. The other three days I work from a satellite office about 20 minutes from my home.

I can only do this because I have my parents that do drop off and pick up for my son. I do this commute for a lot of reasons, but mainly, it's becuse I took some time off after the birth of my son and I wanted to renter the workforce without having to start all over at at new company, new systems, new products.

My DH has a very long commute like yours in Houston, and the only way it works is that I work 10 min away from our house. I feel so terrible for you. I wish the traffic to that part of town weren't so bad . We have considered moving so we can both be equidistant from work, but it just makes sense for one of us to be very close vs both be not as close. Hopefully you will find a better situation soon!

I drive 85miles/90minutes each way 2x a week.
It is hard and sometimes I stay out of town overnight instead.
I did it for the money. Once daycare costs kicked in we were barely making ends meet but we couldn't afford for one of us to quit. So, I decided that if I had to work (and I actually like working) I better make enough for it to be worthwhile.
I am hoping to transition to a slot closer to home in the next year but if not the money is worth the commute 2x a week.

I couldn't do it every day though!

@chibee: A friend of mine used to do a variant of this commute, from LBI to the Lincoln Tunnel, basically, but he drove. 100 miles each way!

@looch: commuting into the city is a nightmare!!!! I can't imagine driving that must have been so stressful!!!

I guess I'm a super-commuter.

I'm officially based in our London office which is a 3 hour commute (each way) from my home during peak hours! I only do this commute twice per week because my company are very gracious in allowing me to work from my nearest office - which is 25 miles away from my home. Still, in rush hour traffic, it takes me an hour and a half to get there (plus 1.5hrs home!).

I therefore drive 550 miles per week and spend 21hrs per week in the car!! Wow, when I put it like that is pretty horrific.....!

I don't really mind the commute because I enjoy driving - I LOVE putting the music up loud and singing my heart out! Plus, my company pay for my petrol to and from the London office (God love them!) and accept that I will roll in late and leave the office early when the need arises. I'm very fortunate.

I used to travel 1.5 hours each way (3 hours total). I had to drive to the Marc, take the Marc to the metro, metro to my stop and then walk 3 blocks to my office.

Now I drive (5 days a week) 30 miles one way and spend 1:30/day commuting. It blows. My office is moving to the county I live in soon and that move will cut 200 miles off my commute a week.

DH used to do a combination drive/train commute 75 miles away from home 3 times a week and telecommuted 1 day. The commute took 2 hours each way. What made it worse is that to limit his commute, he worked four 10-hour days. So he would get up at 5am, be out the door by 5:30am, get to work by 7:30am and work until 6:30pm, then start his commute home. He didn't get home until 8:30/9pm. He'd have a good deal of commuter traffic too, because he worked in the middle of the city. It was the worst.

Now he commutes 70 miles from home 2-3 times a week for a different job. Its way more manageable because he teaches now at a college, so his classes aren't usually during commute hours and he can just drive all the way in without switching over to a train. So his commute is about 60-90 minutes each way, depending on traffic. He teaches a few classes and then heads home. These days, he leaves around 10am, gets home around 7pm. Plus he's off during winter, spring, and summer breaks from the college, so he's home a lot.

I work about 10 miles from home so its a 20-30 minute commute for me, which I think will work out nicely for us when the baby comes.
