Has anyone had a baby naming ceremony for their new baby? We are not religious and will not be having a baptism, but I love the idea of having a little get together with close friends and family to celebrate!

Not pregnant yet, but we will! I'm not religious either, DH goes to UU church but was raised catholic. His parents will expect a christening, and that will not happen unless as adults they make that choice for themselves. DH is Nigerian & in his culture they have naming ceremonies I think on day 7 after the baby is born, I'd have to double check that though! Anyway, we've talked about it and think that a good compromise would be having the naming at his UU church so his family feels like the baby has been introduced in a church and we do the Nigerian naming at the same time. Plus I could put baby in a cute gown & who doesn't love a baby in a cute gown?!? And we could have our fav photographer do some newborn pics as well as ceremony ones : )
What are you thinking of doing for the naming ceremony? Or more of a sip & see kind of welcome party?

We had a friend from high school who now does weddings and commitment ceremonies officiate our wedding and I would love to have her perform a short ceremony with a few readings and then just have everyone stick around for drinks/cake/appetizers and just have a little family time.
We could even do it at the same place we had our wedding because it is on my husband's family's land and it will be summertime.
We'll probably give ourselves a couple months to get settled and then have the ceremony, but I just read about it today and I love the idea!

We are thinking about doing something like this as part of her 1 year birthday celebration since family will be making the trip for that. Have no idea how we will do this yet, I was thinking of just making up some sort of "ceremony" so far my idea is to have everyone who attends write a wish/hope/prayer for LO--the paper will say "Be _______" for instance "Be Happy" or "Be Compassionate" and have everyone stand in a circle, read their wishes with me, hubby, and LO in the middle. Then I'd like us to talk about the meaning of her name. If our friends/family who we've asked to be "guide parents" are able to make the trip, we'll have them in the circle with us, too.
I still have 4 months to plan the vision I have in my mind
ETA: Our daughter's name starts with a B, that's why I like the "Be ____" idea.

A naming ceremony? I've never heard of this! It's it like baptism/christening? It sounds pretty amazing!

@tlcbaby: This is totally neat! I totally want to do this in addition to a christening.

We attended a really sweet ceremony; the couple were Christian - he of Maori descent, she of Indian descent. Instead of having a traditional Christening, they had a Christian blessing of the baby and then involved other traditions of their cultures too! It was fabulous!

This is a practice in Judaism for girls- it's called a Brit Milah (or baby naming) and it's done instead of a Bris, for girl babies. We would do this in the event that we have a girl someday. From reading that article, they pretty much ripped off this concept and deemed it a "non religious ceremony"... Kind of annoying but in any case, it's a very nice concept and a good excuse to hold a party to welcome baby
