Did anybody self-administer their own shots for IUI? I will be on CLomid, - oral, Gonal-F Injection and a Trigger shot that I don't remember which type. I will be taking an Injection class along with my husband. He is afraid of shots or hurting me so I guess I have to do it myself. I wish my mom, who's a nurse didn't live two hours away.

I know someone who did their own shots for IVF. Her husband also is crazy scared of shots. They had his mom go with them to the class just in case she ever needed help. And his dad is a doctor so he was able to help with some too. Do you know anyone else that you can take with you for back up?

No not really. He will go with me to the class, so maybe he can get over his fear. He does have a friend that is a nurse who lives about 20 minutes away, she might be able to help in an emergency. I don't think I want to take my MIL and that's about my only other option which I really don't want to do, just because and the fact she's u;tra busy taking care of elderly parents.

@kayakgirl73: You don't have a fear of shots, do you? Hopefully you'll be fine, my friend ended up doing most of the shots herself and just called his dad for the tough one.

i had to give myself shots twice for ivf. the first time was SO SO SO SO SO SO SO scary. but once i got it done, it was okay. the 2nd time, i thought it would be easier since i've done it once already, but the needle was thicker (different meds) and wasn't going in so took like 3 or 4 stabs before it went in. thank god, because i was starting to panic. but the psychological part of sticking a needle in you was easier. luckily, my hubby's a doctor so he had no issues giving me the shots.

I think I'm okay with shots they don't bother me at the Doctor's office. Blood draws are other story since I've issues with getting light-headed and woozy before. I'm not an easy blood draw.

@kayakgirl73: for me, it was actually giving myself the shots that was so scary. i don't mind doctors where i can squeeze my fists really tight, look away and think about something else. it was actually having to administer it to myself that was the hard part.

I chickened out and could not give myself the shots. I made my husband do it. He felt guilty that I had to do all the hard stuff anyways so he figured the least he could do was give me the shots. he did hate hurting me though and I think his reluctance made it hurt more. Go figure it probably would have been better to try myself but I just couldn't

I've given myelf both of the injections you mentioned.
I think gonal-f is pretty easy - doesn't burn or anything going in and the needle is pretty short. The only funny thing I noticed with that is that the needle seemed to be 'stickier' in my skin than the others, so it felt a little weird pulling it back out. But not really a big deal.
On the trigger shot, if you're going to do it yourself, I highly recommend Ovidrel or something similar that is to be injected subcutaneously so you can put it in your belly. The premixed hcg shots generally need to be refrigerated, but you can take them out a little early and roll them back and forth in your palms to warm them up a little before injecting - just a comfort thing.
If you have to do an intramuscular shot for the hcg, ask the nurse to put an X on your hip with a sharpie at your last appt before trigger, so you know exactly where to put it. And ice, ice, ice - I iced the spot for my IM hcg trigger during IVF for like half hour prior, and didn't feel the needle at all.

yes. i had the same exact medications for a couple of my IUI cycles (used ovidrel for my trigger shot). there were definitely days when i had to self-administer shots into my belly when my husband was out of town. i just prepared everything in advance and got it done quickly. wasn't bad at all. but if you ever have to take menopur shots, definitely have someone there - that medicine really burns!

I did a couple of times when DH wasn't around. The anticipation was waaaay worse than the actual injection
After doing it once or twice, I just got over it and just stuck myself really quickly.

I didn't have IUI but I'd definitely be administering my own shots if I did!! Husband does not like needles (that's an understatement). Several of my relatives have type 1 diabetes and have to give their own shots multiple times every day, so I kind of grew up around it. From what I hear, it isn't so bad once you get over the idea of it. the needle itself barely hurts and what pain you have is over in a second or 2.

Once he starts doing it, it won't weird him out so much. It's the initial fear, ya know? Everyone's gotta get past taht hump
