Anyone ever commissioned an artist to turn a picture into a painting?
My sister is doing this for my BIL - and it has me intrigued. I am thinking about it for DH...something for him to hang in his office. I have a great picture of him and DD1 that basically doesnt have faces (or not much facial detail)...which is usually the part of a painting that I have issues with. So I am thinking it could be cool...

I commissioned a painting a while ago because all of the artist's paintings were sold. I showed her the samples of her work i really liked, and what look i was going for.
When you're commissioning art, i would be sure that you're familiar with the artist's work so you're not surprised by what you get. I would also be sure to use an artist that will have a style you really like.

To turn a picture into an actual painting, no, but I like the idea!
There are a ton of photoshop filters out there that you can do this on your own, to get a flavor for what it might look like/set your expectations.

I contacted someone there that did a watercolor painting of the house we grew up in and gave it to my parents.

@Mrs D: It turned out really well! I told her a few of the parts of the house that I really wanted her to highlight (specific plants and a garden arbor they had to leave behind) and she did great. I think the hardest part for me was getting a photo that really showed/represented the house well enough.

Yes I just did something similar for Father's Day. I also commissioned a photo of my dogs from a painter like 8 years ago. I'm going to commission another artist to paint our house and another of our VW.

This guy Paul Ferney does a "commission project" each year and you could send him a photo and for a really great price he sends you back a small format painting... I believe he does regular commissions too - but i did this for a gift and loved it.

Yup! I sent a pic collage of the colors/furnishings/decor in our master bedroom, and she painted us an original piece!

Yes on Etsy. We had portraits of our dog and cat painted and they were hung in our DD's nursery. They turned out really well.

@Mrs D: Yes. As a gift to my parents to thank them for helping with our wedding, we had one of their favorite local artists do a painting inspire by one of their favorite photographs from the wedding. It's abstract so doesn't look like us, but it definitely resembles the photo and they absolutely love the finished piece. I would 100% do something like that again.

My husband got me one for an anniversary where they printed a wedding photo onto canvas and then painted over it - it's pretty cool, although not exactly what you're talking about.

My brother multiple times but I don't know if that counts 
He is an awesome artist but more the "starving artist" type. He's done several oil paintings for us and they are super special to me!

I commissioned a painting from an artist (Edie Cohn) I admired. I had wanted to buy one of her pieces for a long time but it was just a crazy amount of money for a painting of someone I didn't know.
It is a painting of my Great-Grandma with my two kids. The artist took a photo of my son with my Great-Grandma and photoshopped my daughter into it. I got to approve the photoshopped image and then she sent me updates over the year (!) it took to paint it.
This was an artist I adored so I gave her free reign. I can be picky about faces, but I loved all her work so I wasn't too worried about it.
It wasn't cheap or fast but the final result is amazing. It's not for everyone, but it's really special to me.

I've also commissioned an oil painting of my wedding dress. My Mom made the dress so I got the painting as a gift. This one was just off etsy and was more affordable. Gorgeous result though!

I have been playing with the idea of having a painting of my wedding bouquet done. I think I came across it on Pinterest and I loved the idea. I LOVED my bouquet and right now I have a photo of it on our bedroom wall, but I think a painting would be so beautiful!
