Pshhhh my kids are *always* smiling, can't you tell‽ Truthfully though, my babies have always been called "serious" or people have said they're "mean-mugging." They're happy, and smile and giggle plenty, but have never been the happy babies people think of. I like to say they're just very focused on the world around them!

@erinpye: ahh! so cute! and jinx! My J is so focused and doesn't miss a beat.

@erinpye: @rachiecakes: I have "mean mugging" babies too! LO1 started smiling around 8 weeks, but you reeeeally had to work for it. Same with laughing. He laughed at 4 months and it was such a beautiful sound, but it took awhile to hear it regularly. He wasn't a grumpy baby, just very intent on listening or trying to practice new skills. He's a very smiley toddler now.

LO2 is just 5 weeks old, but he's only given me one half-smile so far and has that same serious expression his brother had. I think it's genetic. You know that expression "resting bitch face?" I has it, even though I think I'm a pretty friendly person. Hey, it keeps weirdos away, right?

My LO took forever to really be smiley, but he smiles and laughs constantly. Even after he started smiling a lot more he'd get real serious when we'd try to take a picture of him, I think he was concentrating on the phone/camera. He essentially looked like this for the first 4 or 5 months:

As a toddler my child refuses to smile for the camera, she was always a happy/smiley baby but now she doesn't show it very often. If she does it's never when I want her too

5 months today, and he is still very "serious". I like to pretend that he is just very contemplative, and spends his days thinking about the world. He only very recently started smiling when we play with him. I got giggles when I gave him a "kisses attack!" this weeekend, which was amazingly exciting.

I joke that I *earn* my smiles, while other babies just give them away. But I secretly hope that he continues to get more smiley as he gets older.
