I grew up with one, but where I live now, it's not at all common. We have 3 large compost bins in the backyard and have very little food waste to begin with. I think we're supposed to put all our non-compostable food scraps into a green bag for pick-up, but we never do. I don't miss having a garbage disposal at all. I think it's kind of gross.

@Foodnerd81: the thinking is that food scraps go into the water supply and require a lot of resources to remove. What is removed is trucked to the landfill. What isn't ends, up in the water supply and negatively affects nitrogen levels.
In older homes the small particulate can clog plumbing over time (tampon plumbing thread anyone?).

We have one, but we have a septic system so it's not recommended to use it. We use a mesh strainer to catch food, but I like that we have it to deal with accidental debris that gets down there. I probably run it a couple of times a month.

We have one. Our city has compost so most food scraps go in the compost but it's a nice back-up for all the bits that don't get scraped. That said, we didn't have one before and I wasn't dying without it or anything!
I haven't had an issue with utensils going down there but DH definitely has done that. He's a little oblivious so that might be why

Thanks everyone. I am still quite torn because I see all the benefits of having it but also see the benefits of not having it. DH is pretty set on having it so I am sure we will end up getting it since I dont feel strongly one way or the other

Live in CA and everywhere I've ever lived has had one, except our house when we bought it. We lasted 1 month living here until FIL was doing dishes one day and the next week brought us one and installed it. It's a must for us!

We have one of those sinks with two basins. The shallo side doesn't have it, but the other side does. I wish both sides had it. Sometimes after I scrape food off there's still caked on sauces and bits that only come up after soaking in the fridge for awhile. The disposal is great for that.

I never had one growing up, but I have one in my current house, and I like it. I scrape most food in the trashcan, but I use the disposal for any little bits that are leftover. I've never had a problem with it clogging or having other issues. As far as silverware getting lost in there - I have a two sided sink, and I always put silverware and other small things in the side without the disposal.

We have always had one, and moved into a temporary home while we find something in our new city to buy, and it doesn't have one..and I HATE IT. It's my second biggest gripe about the rental
