Loved it! My only quibble about the movie was Russell Crowe's singing voice. He is very nasal!

almost saw it today, but decided against it. I've seen the musical three times, once from the second row and with one of my favorite singers in the cast (Lea Salonga as Fantine)... I don't want to be disappointed in the movie... maybe will wait til it's on DVD.

@nycalimama we have seen the musical a few times and were also afraid that the movie would underwhelm us. After seeing it today, i can say that most of the les mis singers were really good and others were just ok. But the acting is incomparable to any live les mis plays I have ever seen (These actors deserve Oscar nominations)

It was good! I saw it on Christmas Day. Like @Mrs. Bee, I found it easier to understand the story watching the movie, even though I've seen it multiple times on stage in the past.
I may not be a good judge though, because I love just about any movie. The key is to NEVER read reviews beforehand, and to go in with no expectations whatsoever
Also, was anyone else totally distracted by how tiny Eponine's waist was???? It looked both unnatural and painful (she did a great job though).

I saw it on Christmas morning right before we left for the airport! Priorities I loved it, even though some of the singing wasn't great. I expected better singing from Hugh Jackson and Anne Hathaway... I think they both sacrificed singing for acting, but their acting was great! My favorite scene was "Do you hear the people sing"... it gave me chills!

I can’t wait to see it! That’s my favorite musical; and I’ve seen it several times live and can’t wait to see how the movie compares. One thing that I thought was really interesting about the singing and it not being perfect – all the actors sang live, every single take. They didn’t go back in afterwards and dub in songs; so the actors really were tired, stressed, etc. when they sang.

We saw it Christmas Day, and loved it. This was pretty surprising because 1) the theater was packed so we had horrible seats very close to the screen, 2) it's Wagon Sr.'s favorite musical, and he's seen it 3 times and the old movie version, 3) I've seen it once with Lea Salonga who is my favorite singer, and 4) I really hate Anne Hathaway. I was prepared to just tolerate her since basically she's only in the beginning and end. But she really blew me away. I think this movie actually changed my opinion of her and I actually like her now. That is REALLY hard for me to do, especially with female actors!
I loved that the singing wasn't pre-recorded. There were so many very intimate shots of the actors singing very very close up... you could see every pore in their skin and hear every little faltering of their voice, and it really added and magnified the emotion of the movie. I was totally riveted the entire time.
It really blew me away. Sorry to hype it up but I was really really impressed. I was uncontrollably crying during some parts. Wagon Sr. is REALLY picky with these things but he said it was really well done and he also loved it. We both kind of want to see it again before it leaves theaters.

@alie: Eponine's waist!!!! I was thinking that the entire time too. It was surprising since she has kind of a round face and her arms looked kinda big too (maybe they were just really muscular?). Her waist couldn't have been more than 24 inches. Omg.

@mrs. wagon: I was thinking the same! I'm sure the rest of her is "normal-sized", but in comparison to THAT WAIST... her proportions just seem odd. I feel bad focusing in on that when she really did a great job with the role, but it was impossible to not notice (plus I think wardrobe really played up how tiny it is)

@alie: seriously. It was actually distracting for me. But she was excellent. I guess she had played Eponine in the show and that's all she's really done. I bet she (and these other theater-only actors) start getting roles in Hollywood now! like Marius! He was adorable!!! Maybe I'm a sucker for freckles.
