We, and our pediatrician, think LO is suffering from seasonal allergies. For the past week her eyes have been watery and she's been rubbing them a lot, her nose is constantly draining clear fluid and she's coughing from the post nasal drip. Nap time and bed time have become a nightmare because she can't suck her pacifier because she can't breath through her nose. Our doctor is suggesting 2 mls of Zyrtec every morning, and Benedryl at night as needed. He said we likely will have to keep up the Zyrtec for 4-6 weeks while allergens are in full swing. We hate to give her medicine every day like that, but we also feel like we can't just keep going as is because our LO is obviously suffering. Just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this? Do you use Zyrtec? Does it help?

@MamaMoose: No personal experience but after M's double ear infection last weekend our ped said that babies with seasonal allergies are more susceptible to ear infections and if they continue he's going to recommend we start giving M Zyrtec. So I'm interested in seeing the responses you get!
ETA: She rubs her eyes a lot and sneezes often. Also has lots of clear drainage from her nose.

I wonder if R does. We were outside a lot yesterday and her eyes were watery. Her nose is congested off and off as well, all clear.

My DD has seasonal allergies and she's been tested for it. She takes Zyrtec every day during the season. She was only diagnosed this year at age 5, but I know she's had it at least since age 2, because without fail during the months of March/April, she scratches her scalp and neck like crazy. My DS is starting to do it too, but my pediatrician didn't think he should be tested yet since kids allergies can change all the time?

We use Claritin. But Zyrtec is just as effective. My son's allergist recommended daily use but I don't. I use it when I see him sniffling and I know it's not a cold. You can also try a saline rinse. That helps flush out anything inside your LO's nose. Do it as soon as you get home. And it's safe to use multiple times a day.

@erwoo: We do put saline drops in her nose every night before bed. What exactly is the rinse? Like a neti pot? LO is only 16 months and I definitely don't see her allowing us to to do anything like the neti pot.
ETA: I thought zyrtec was only effective if it builds up in your system so sporadic use doesn't work? Is that not true?

If she lets you use it you can eventually get the pediatric one but make sure you use either distilled water or water that has been boiled and cooled down to a little warm. Don't use it cold b/c it stings. I usually warm it up in a cup of hot water for a little bit. You can warm up the little tubes too.
Every child is different. My oldest HATED it for the longest time, but now at almost 5 he asked me to rinse his nose 10 times the other night. It helps to get rid of all that gunk in their noses when they are sick too. My youngest never minded it at all. I started using it even before he turned 16 months. He has always willingly run to the sink to do it.

We give DS Zyrtec everyday - 1/2 tsp. The pediatrician suggested it after repeated ear infections. Plus, I have allergies so it's not a shocker he probably has them too. We also think he's susceptible because we noticed sensitivity around cats and he has a little eczema. The child loves being outside all day so we give it to him daily.
He did end up getting tubes a couple of months ago, but we kept up with the Zyrtec since it's allergy season.

@Mamasig: my LO got tubes last sept after 4 ear infections in 4 months. And she was ear infection free until allergy season started back up (last week of March).

@MamaMoose: I'm wondering how he will do with future ear infections. A few weeks ago he was a little sick and the doc said his ears were red and irritated but not infected.
