My DD does the exact same thing at 6+ months. Was wondering the same thing.

Yep, LO was exactly the same at that age. She's only just stopped eating books at 14 months. We had to cut out reading a book as part of her bedtime routine when she was younger because she's just get riled up that we weren't letting her tear it apart.

@Cherrybee: I was starting to get worried about it (because I am neurotic and all the mums I knew were going on and on about how their LOs just LOVED storytime) and spoke to a librarian friend.

She said at that age the aim is just to get your child familiar with the concept of books and suggested keeping out two or three that I didn't care about getting ruined and let her interact with the books however she wanted - eating, throwing around etc.

She still won't sit still for a full story, but she'll look at the pictures for a bit with me. I guess my romantic visions of snuggling up and reading Winnie the Pooh with her will have to wait a while.

@Cherrybee: Same thing here. Both lo's are 1 and reading is out of the question. They love to eat books, but won't let us hold them long enough to read them.

We have a board book that has no spine b/c she tried to eat it! And many other books have chunks missing. She's almost 17 mo and can actually flip through books nicely now - not that she also doesn't still chew when she gets the chance.

We only use board books and she definitely tries to eat them but she will usually sit still for a short story. She is 7 months. We try to do them before naps and bed when she is less lively, in addition to other times during the day. We've been reading to her since she was a newborn so maybe she's used to it? Her attention span was alot longer back then though!

I have a few I can read start to finish before se starts trying to eat them - think Sandra boynton short. Luckily I have most of them memorized so I just keep reciting them while she chews them.

She has started lifting the flaps though, which is so adorable. I know she will start ripping them soon enough. And sometimes she will sit and flip through a book by herself which I love. But mostly they are chew toys.

LO is 11 months and still loves chewing on books. Sometimes he will listen longer if I give him a teething type toy to munch while reading.

@Cherrybee: A is 11 months and we are in the same boat. Every once in a while I can get through a short book before nap time, but he mostly just grabs it from me and chews on it or flips through the pages.
