We'll probably do play/dress up makeup pretty young. As for wearing for real... maybe middle school? I want her to know she never HAS to wear makeup. And that not all adult women wear makeup, so wearing makeup doesn't = grown up. But I also don't want to make it some forbidden fruit. It isn't worth fighting about IMO.

Maybe 13-14 for color cosmetics? I dunno...I wanted to start way earlier than that!

I started wearing makeup regularly in 6th grade. Back then and now, I saw it as an opportunity to be "creative." I liked reading the preteen magazines with tips about colors and such and trying them out. I think it really helped my confidence, actually; and I wasn't focused on "concealing" flaws. So, I'd probably be comfortable with my daughter experimenting around that age, but try to have conversations with her about the "whys" of makeup and outer beauty vs. inner beauty.

That being said, all I wear now is mascara, concealer, powder, and tinted lip balm. About 5-7 minutes each morning. No "creativity" anymore

I'd lean towards when she wants as well, but within reason. And with discussions about it so she has a healthy attitude towards it. Though really I have no clue how to approach that. Something to research in the coming years!

Tinted Chapstick/lip smackers whenever. Actual lipstick on a tube seems outdated to me (or just something that would not appeal to youngins), I just wear nice tinted gloss, so fancy adult brands/packaging at least middle school.

I think around 6th grade/ 12 or 13, but more sheer stuff and lipgloss. No bright red lips that young.

I started experimenting with makeup the summer leading into 7th grade. I think 6th or 7th grade is a good time.

I think middle school is appropriate, around 12-13. I began wearing eyeliner at that age, so I would be fine with lip color.

I'm asking myself this question right now for my 12 year old step-daughter who just started 7th grade.
I'm thinking allowing more neutral colors, tinted lip glosses, dark-brown mascara/liner (vs black), neutral/skin tone eye shadows. She's got great skin so doesn't really need concealers.
There are only a couple girls in her class that wear make-up.
She hasn't actually asked to wear make-up yet so I won't be bringing it up...

My parents let me wear eye shadow and neutral color lip gloss in middle school. It wasn't an everyday thing. I occasionally wore makeup for special events (recitals, weddings), but I couldn't wear a full face of make up until I was 16.

I have a 12yr old and she doesn't wear any makeup. She's allowed some slightly colored lip balm but that's it. We are already dealing with her being 'a woman' and boobs (like real ones and cleavage) and she just looks too much like an adult that in my opinion make up isn't needed. However, she has been allowed to color her hair a little. Mainly bc it's done for free by a friend. Just too much too soon IMO
