Our center is peanut free! They called me today because I put sunflower seed butter in LO's lunch and I forgot to label it!

We aren't in daycare, but our oldest who is in the 1st grade has a peanut free classroom. So he can bring those things for lunch (they quarantine all the nut allergy kids basically in the cafeteria), but his afternoon snack can't contain peanuts.
I mistakenly sent pb filled pretzels and got a note. I felt bad and ashamed lol

Our school asks that all lunches and snacks be peanut free. But my DD has come home a few times telling me that her schoolmates came to school with PB sandwiches. I was upset (she is allergic).

Nope, however they were when LO was having allegy issues (it's an in home so she just didn't serve it.) but now that she's been cleared for nuts, they eat it again!

Yes; they are all-nut-free. You also can't bring in any sugary item like cupcakes, cookies, etc.

That's interesting you got a note because sunflower butter is often a substitute for people with peanut allergies. Sunflower seeds aren't tree nuts.

@KT326: I wonder if it's because the smell/texture is so similar. I'm peanut-allergic and can't bring myself to eat Sunbutter because the smell brings back memories of PB reactions.

@KT326: oh, they are ok with it but the aide thought it was PB! They wanted to double check!

@autumnlove: ah, that makes sense then!
@spaniellove: I have a friend that is the same way!

Yup, I just noticed a sign this week saying they're a nut-free facility.

I get annoyed because our daycare isn't always consistent. For a while it was no strawberries and the. They went to no Peanuts but it's not really advertised and it's easy to forget. If I was a parent with allergies I would want to make sure it was clearly noted and other parents were frequently reminded.

DS is in elementary school and they even have pb&j on the lunch menu. The kids aren't allowed to trade snacks though. But I think if there was an allergy in the class they'd let us know not to send snacks with peanuts.

M's not in daycare but the center that we go to for playgroups, etc is strictly nut free

I'm worried about this because our new daycare is not peanut-free and our daughter has a peanut allergy. She will only be 2 when she goes there, so not really old enough to know better at that point. They say they have them sit at a different table and don't let anyone share food, but I am wondering if that really works.

Yes! LO's daycare is completely nut free . . . no outside foods are allowed, unless they are pre-packaged and scanned (by the center) for ingredients.

@locavore_mama: i've never seen a place that was egg free! interesting, so no foods containing egg are allowed or they don't serve things with egg?

I'm looking for a peanut free school right now. Lo have a severe peanut allergy.

Just curious, other than your own child's daycare/school, does anyone know how common of a practice this is? The preschool we're interested in for a few years from now is totally peanut/tree nut free, but I don't know about others...
(Asking because my allergy is so severe that I react to traces of peanut and may not be comfortable with my LO bringing it home somehow)

When DD was in daycare it was peanut free. Her preschool classroom is peanut free but the school is not.
We often got asked if it was Sun butter when we'd send sandwiches.

@spaniellove: almost every daycare I toured was bare minimum nut free. A lot of them even provided a completely separate lunch table for kids with nut allergies because of what you stated.

@mrs. bird: no eggs straight up. I think there are a few kids that are severely allergic. Their policy is if they see it they have to throw it out. one parent brought in a fast food breakfast sandwich for her son. Technically they should have thrown it out but they didn't want the child to starve so one of the teachers sat with him in the staff break room while he ate it. Then they completely sanitized the table afterwards.
My nephew is actually SEVERELY allergic. If he eats or touches anything that has come in contact with eggs his throats starts immediately closing up in a nanosecond!

@locavore_mama: omg that's terrible for your nephew! I think many vaccines contain eggs

@sunny: yes! It's actually much much better now that he's older. Now if we catch it fast enough if he drinks a ton of water it calms down within 30. Before he would break out in hives all over his face and neck and it would take hours for it to calm down.
