My family was surprised to hear we were thinking about TTC for a 3rd. I think 2 is so common these days the thought of 3 is weird to so many! Maybe because of the tag team approach?

Nope, I'm the one leaning two, DH is leaning three, and EVERYONE and their mom tells me we have to have a third ("a girl"). 'Cause you know that's a great reason to have a 3rd child, AND it's controllable!

I grew up in an area where 6+ kids was the norm. A family of 4 is considered small around here. So no, people just assume we're going to have a large family.

Well we're only planning on 2, but my SIL is currently pregnant with #6 and she gets all sorts of side-eyes and rude comments about it!

Not really. I always tell people we're planning on 3 and no omegas said anything about it. Maybe once I'm actually pregnant with #2? I always wonder when people have 2 if they're planning on any more! I have two friends this year that have 2 and then finally went for #3 when their youngest was 4!

my mom keeps telling me only to have as many kids as you have hands. I think I'd like three and whenever I say that people always so oh you'll change your tune once you have another one

We are both from three kid families and had always been pretty vocal about wanting 3 or 4 kids. So now that we have two and aren't as sure about having a third, I think they'll actually be surprised if we stop at two!

@Greentea: a lot of people feel that 2 is easier because the parent-to-kid ratio is 1:1. So you can tag team each kid With 3 kids you're outnumbered!

@Greentea: @SweetiePie: yup! 1 parent per kid.
@PinkElephant: haha I like that. One child per hand.

Lol, I thought you wanted 3 more in addition to your 2. And that did surprise me!
nectarine / 2973 posts
Yes! All the time, even with my family. I get a lot of "but why??". I've always wanted a larger family and hope to have 3-4 kids. 2 is definitely the norm around here.

Sometimes, but we are both teachers, so I think it makes sense to some people because we obviously don't mind surrounding ourselves with lots of children haha.
We do get asked if we're going to try for a girl because we have 2 boys. That really annoys me!
pomegranate / 3565 posts
No. But only because I have two boys. I always get that - are you going to try for the girl comment. I bet if I had one of each, people would be surprised we want a 3rd.

I grew up with most families around me having 2, and I was one of 2, and I always wanted 2 myself. I personally wouldn't be able to handle 3, but lately, in my circle, it seems like 3 is the new 2!
grapefruit / 4056 posts
Yes, but I think it is because we have 1 boy and 1 girl. When we say we are still planning on a 3rd people say dumb stuff like "but you already have 1 of each so your family is perfect" or "you know you don't have to right?"
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
People just expect that we are done because we have one of each. My dad told us we need to stop. Mmmmhhhhmmmmm.

In a perfect world, we'd have 4. Not sure if we can afford it, but when I share that (especially at work!) people are like WHOA! FOUR? YOU'RE CRAAAAAAAZY!
Meh.

Yes, pretty surprised. Mainly because everyone around us in NYC has 1 or 2 kids. Having kids here is expensive!!

@Mamasig: I hear the same thing. People aren't surprised when I say I want more than two, and I get the "trying for a girl" comment. Like I can somehow pick how that's going to happen.
honeydew / 7235 posts
@mrsjyw: I can't believe how many girl comments you're getting. It's cray.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
@hellobeeboston: yep, yesterday it was my eyebrow lady, (DS was with me and I told her about DS2) telling me that I have to have one more (a girl), 2 boys, 1 girl is perfection! is what she said

Tons of ppl are having 3 in my area so I don't think people would be surprised.
nectarine / 2521 posts
I feel like 3 is the norm for my circle of friends. They all think I'm crazy because I talk about stopping at one.

@Aandmklover: Ha ha, I have a girl and am expecting a boy in July, and that is all I hear! "Perfect family! You can be all done now!"
DH and I are both from big families so no one would blink at us having three. It was much more surprising to my family that I waited as long as I did to have kids and that they were planned.
pomegranate / 3983 posts
Not really. We both coming from a very family-oriented background. I think people would actually be surprised if we stopped with two.
