I avoid anything without elastic waist right now for my DS since he's working on going to the potty.
For DD, anything that's too wide around the neck, because she has narrow shoulders and they fall off of her. I also avoid skinny jeans for her since she hates them. And neon, I avoid neon because it gives me a headache to look at!

I've started avoiding zippers. I love hoodies, but the zipper always irritates her neck and I feel bad. So now I have to look for button-ups, which are harder to come by.
I don't usually do dresses, especially not frilly ones, because they bunch up in the car seat and the front pack. SHe does have a few simple cotton dresses that she wears over pants though

I am not a fan of the elastic waist bands of sleep wear from gap.

I avoid anything other than really soft, comfortable fabrics that will wash easily. My active toddler is way too busy climbing things and making a mess to worry about keeping her clothing nice. I also avoid all shoes that aren't really comfortable and supportive.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
Hoodies, mainly because as an infant, they would interfere with his car seat or napping. I just never bought them, instead we do the fleece zip top things.
Pants that have buttons and zippers, the button holes are a struggle for me!

I avoid things with plasticky "transfer" type motifs on. They can't be tumble dried so they need ironing and ironing them is difficult (because you can iron the motif off). nightmare!
papaya / 10473 posts
After ironing DS's button down shirt with my hair straightening iron yesterday since a regular iron was too frustrating, I can say I will no longer buy them. PITA!

@Cherrybee: Agreed!
I avoid licensed characters, lots of glitter, cheapy plastic designs, jeans with no adjustable waist, PJs with snaps.
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
Licensed characters and a lot of graphic tees. If he wants them when he's old enough to ask for them I'll buy them, but as long as I can control what he wears with no complaints I'll avoid them.
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
I avoid characters/licensed wear at all cost and most shirts that have sayings on them. We also avoid too much pink/frilly outfits.
edit: Also, anything that says princess or has a crown, ect.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
I try to avoid glitter and sparkly things on her clothes. It is VERY DIFFICULT. There are many cute shirts out there that are just ruined by glitter or sparkles. It is very difficult to avoid.
@LuLu Mom: same here. I try to avoid sayings and characters. I don't have a favorite cartoon character and we don't watch TV (she doesn't) so it doesn't make sense to buy anything with characters on it.
A lot of her closet is hand-me-downs, though so I can't be TOO overly picky when things are free.
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
@mediagirl: I agree, we get hand-me-downs from my sister so a couple of her PJs have characters on them, but luckily my sister is like me and doesn't really care for characters! She doesn't watch TV either so it's not like "she likes Minnie" or anything like that!
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@mediagirl: haha my pickiness definitely doesn't transfer to hand me downs or gifts.
Let me retract my statement. Except when it comes to Hello Kitty. I loathe HK! My mom bought her a few HK tops and I sold it at the garage sale. hahahhaha
Most people know my dislike for pink and licensed characters. Except MIL chooses to ignore it and bought her a pink Disney princess sleeper. But of course, it's free, and I don't turn down grandparents buying her gifts! So she wears it.

@locavore_mama: @LuLu Mom: sleep wear hand-me-downs get a pass from me since no one sees them except us.

@locavore_mama: I love HK and Monsters Inc....everything else is not my thing!

i avoid words and characters in general if i'm purchasing them myself, but don't mind them if they're gifted :). i avoid zippers, thick hoods, and for a while i avoided collars too and anything too stiff.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
I don't like words on her clothes. Why I can't do so much of the cheaper stuff at Carter's for daycare cause they just annoy me.
pomegranate / 3890 posts
Sweat pants. I'm probably the only weirdo out there buy I hate D's in sweat pants, to many cute jeans out there!!!
bananas / 9973 posts
@locavore_mama: You loathe HK? Ok, we can no longer be friends! lol! hahah - J/K! I love HK! I don't mind some character stuff, though most of ours are all gifted too. And I don't understand the elastic waist on Gap pjs too? wth they need it for?
I avoid hoodies, overalls, and those shorts one-pieces (I think someone said they're called "john johns") at least for my girl. I think bubble rompers are cuter than the shorts.
cantaloupe / 6397 posts
@Smurfette: I HATE that in the carter's packs of onesies there is always one that has dumb words on it!!!! (the cheap sets)
I don't like words or characters. I also avoid anything I'd have to iron. And dresses for the same reason as @Silva, they are awkward in the carseat!!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@sslm: The girl stuff isn't as bad as the boy stuff. I just don't get, why would I want to dress my child in a shirt that says Mommy little Terror.
pomegranate / 3003 posts
Clothing with tiaras, or the word, "princess" on them. The other day, I was in Macy's, and noticed a girls onesie that said, "Future Princess" on it. In the boys section, a shirt with a screen printed tie and pen coming out of the pocket, and the words, "Future CEO" across the chest. It really pissed me off, so I bought the boy shirt, even though it's 600x too big for DD, at the moment. I might dress my kid like a cupcake sometimes, but she is just as capable of being a CEO, and I hate that some baby clothing paints the opposite picture.

I don't put LO in anything that has sayings or characters on it. I also dislike any princess references and avoid clothes that insinuate that.
We most definitely avoid anything tulle and massive headbands/bows as I don't like either. LO wears very girly clothes - lots of dresses and cute little hair bows to hold her hair out of her face - but I like to keep it in check.
@deerylou: I would have done exactly the same thing! That kind of stuff makes me so mad!! Ugh, the whole 'little girls are princesses' mentality needs to die already!
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
@locavore_mama: I don't think we have any of these elastic waists....can you send me a link to some so I can avoid? lol!
coconut / 8430 posts
@locavore_mama: you can send that Hello Kitty stuff our way
I don't love shirts without a wide neck hole. My LO seems to have a big head or something.
We also don't really buy shorts because they aren't very practical for our climate.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
Not a fan of clothes that are too cutesy and clothes that have words on them (the only clothes we own with words were gifts or hand me downs). I prefer clothes that look like little people clothes (which is why I Baby Gap).
grapefruit / 4717 posts
Anything with licensed characters or cute characters from Carter's. Anything with things like "mommy loves me" or "handsome like daddy." I like mini versions of my husband's clothes instead
pomegranate / 3872 posts
I avoid characters (except HK!) Glitter because it ends up all over her face, and big bows or flowers at the neckline because she just sucks on them and then they look gross.
pineapple / 12793 posts
No characters, no words, no princess stuff, no lace, no tulle, no tutus, no overly pink outfits, no animal print. If snooki would wear it, my daughter will not. I'm really picky with her clothes and have a closet full of gifted stuff that I won't put her in.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@sslm: My SIL loves to give me the I Love Auntie stuff . . . *augh*. WHY? When I made my niece a tutu, I didn't put my name on it anywhere or put a tag in it that read *Made by my Auntie*. So annoying!

Anything too pink, glittery or princess type stuff.
@deerylou: Good idea!

dresses, i feel it gets in the way of her walking because I have to put tights on her since its getting colder
honeydew / 7589 posts
Licensed characters, logos, anything written across the butt, and really in your face pink things.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@oliviaoblivia: haha, if Snooki would wear it.
I also will not put a huge flower headband on my R. No way is a flower going to take attention from how cute she is.

DITTO!!

Anything with characters or anything too ruffly/glittery. And I try to avoid white shirts. They get super dirty and stained and I end up tossing most of them. So I stick to darker colors.
