@Navy_Mommy: ok interesting. Here's another question/comment!! She doesn't like the moby bc she wants to straighten her legs. When can I wear her with her legs out? Any suggestions for either the moby or the ergo for a baby that doesn't want to be scrunched up? Thanks in advance!!! I really want to start wearing her.

@sslm: have you done the legs out hold with the moby? My LO liked that MUCH better than the kangaroo/hug hold.

I so badly wanted to baby-wear with LO but she hated it. I hope with #2, he/she will take to it...It makes such a difference not having to carry them around in your arms!

@sslm: yes, i think so, especially if she's trying to straighten her legs. I think we started using that hold around 8 wks! Much more comfortable for both LO and I.

@sslm: Babywearing International actually now advocates legs out from day one. This post is about a ring sling carry, but it's the same idea no matter what you're wearing baby in...
"Once upon a time, we were told when wearing newborns that their legs should be froggied inside the carrier or sling. Recently the Babywearing schools and Babywearing International have changed their standard for newborns to legs out. I can see how the legs out philosophy would be better for the baby. When in the sling with the legs in, they really aren’t positioned properly for optimal spine and hip alignment….and the cradle carry should really only be used when nursing. When in the leg out position they are in essence still in the froggy position like they should be when legs in… but their weight is being distributed in a different way and not centered on their tailbone like with legs in."

So, yeah, I agree with @hilsy85 , try the legs out hold

@hilsy85: @Navy_Mommy: awesome, thanks ladies! I'm definitely going to try it today

the k'tan wasn't as great as i thought it would be. he did not like being in the kangaroo position (or whatever the newborn position is called). now that he's at least 15 pounds, i wear him in the hug position, but only for 20 minutes or so because he's practically falling out of it.
the ergo works better for us. but if he naps in it, for some reason when he wakes up all hell breaks loose.

@sslm: yep my LO hated the frog leg thing too and was much happier legs out even before he hit the weight recommendation. I just made sure he felt secure and that his knees were higher than his butt.

DD lived in the Ergo and hated the stroller!
DS screams, arches his back, and hates the Ergo, but he's as happy as a clam in the stroller!
You just never know!! I was recommending the Ergo left and right after my first child, but having my 2nd has shut me up. What works for one may not work for the other.

@scg00387: Why do the knees need to be higher then the butt?

@Navy_Mommy: I need to try this. LO is two weeks and HATES the froggie leg position in the Moby. What hold would you recommend for him?
nectarine / 2458 posts
@grizz: I don't know what Moby calls it, but a front wrap cross carry with legs out. Hold on, I'll find a video.

My LO loves her carriers but only if she's just been fed. Otherwise she's too close to my chest and freaks out because she wants to eat. I'm not to the skill level where I can wear and feed at the same time.

@sslm: hmmm honestly I don't remember it had it in the manual. Also my LO never let me wear him just around the house but would outside. So we started with short walks and increased, taking him out if he fussed. Now he is happy as a clam in the ergo or boba @Smurfette: I think that is how its supposed to e for any carrier? Something about where the baby's weight an pressure pulls. I'm no expert I just know that's what the sales person stressed when I was looking in store. @Navy_Mommy can probably speak to it better than I can!
nectarine / 2458 posts
@Smurfette: it takes pressure off their hips so they can develop properly. If you were to pick up a newborn their legs are naturally pulled up with their knees above their hips and they slowly spread their body out over time.

I'm more of a stroller mom but also baby wear on occasion, especially when traveling since it's more convenient. My LO haaaated the carrier for a while and I was so sad about it! I don't think she tolerated being in it until she was maybe 2 months old. We have the beco gemini and I love it.

@Navy_Mommy: Interesting, thanks! I just started wearing her in the Ktan with legs out this week. I will make sure it is the right way. Hard to get her in it by myself but I will stand in the bathroom, so I can see in the mirror.

@Navy_Mommy: I wear my almost 6 week old in a ring sling and she loves it. I've wanted to try wearing her legs out but her feet turn purple. I have her knees up high and I've read that her feet might turn slightly purple...but it still freaks me out. Have you ever noticed that with your LO? The same happens to SIL & her 7 month old when she wears her in any position that has her legs out.

@emg86: Wesley's feet turn purple-ish sometimes. Try to make sure there isn't too much fabric bunched up in your baby's knees and they should be fine.

Those of you with an Ergo: when I used the infant insert, I just basically sat the baby on the cushion like it was a chair. He seemed pretty comfortable like that. I assumed that was how it was supposed to be done, but I wouldn't refer to that as a "froggy" position? Maybe I'm missing something.
