I used to avoid honking but in Mexico City I've become a pro. I have honked at police officers. Many times. I also have this great idea I'm working on for a rear horn, you know, to honk at people behind you. I think this would be very useful at times. Or maybe just a directional horn.

PS I had to make a personal policy to avoid honking within a certain diameter of my workplace due to an awkward situation a few years back with a VIP.

I hate it when people honk. Honking is useful but I personally feel it should be reserved for "OMG WATCH OUT!" It is like yelling to me.

@Greentea: I think it's also appropriate when someone is being really inconsiderate, like stopping in the middle of the road so that they're blocking an entire lane or something like that.

That said, I'm too timid to honk usually lol.

I have never ever had to honk at anyone! Maybe I'm just lucky and haven't met anyone that looks like they're about to run into me...or maybe I just haven't noticed

I used to never honk my horn, I don't think I'd ever used it once until I started driving with my husband. He uses it all the time, and it's rubbed off on me a little. I use it mostly in situations where people just aren't paying attention and come close to hitting me.

@NorCalWayfarer: Why is it that it seems cab drivers are the worst most inconsiderate drivers of all!? I think every 3rd time I see a bad driver, it's a taxi.

I honk a LOT. Like, I probably average at least one honk a day and I don't even drive very much in a day.

When DH bought a new car in the fall I tested the horns on all the cars we test drove. One of the salespeople said none of his other customers had ever listed a good horn as an important criterion before.

I LOVE USING THE HORN!

@Anagram: This! I just moved to NYC and I hate that people honk at me for not killing pedestrians. What's even worse is that not only do they honk you, but then they try to go around you and inevitably have to stop anyway, because otherwise they'd run someone over. Drives me crazy!!

Wow. I feel so aggressive. I am definitely a honker.. especially when people do dick head moves like not using their signal or just driving like an inconsiderate asshole.

ETA: Drivers in a rush are a total pet PEEVE. Leave 10 minutes earlier so you aren't driving like a total dick. You don't own the roads.

I honk when someone is doing something ridiculously dumb or dangerous. I also honk quickly if someone is not paying attention and the light has turned, or to say thanks.

Actually, I'm reading this just after getting home... The roads are winding here and it's 6 degrees and they're a bit icy at the shoulder. I drive exactly the speed limit when they're like that (especially with LO in the backseat). Some guy tailgated me on these windy back roads for miles, then pulled into the oncoming lane of traffic and floored it to cut me off. I definitely laid on the horn!!

@Mae: I have always wished for several horn types (obviously I am a honker). A thank you honk tone, reminder the light is green gentle honk, aggressive you are a total dick and I want to run you over ..twice..honk.

@Mae: I am trying to think of when I do a thank you honk... it would be the same tone as the double tap goodbye I give when leaving a friends place - parting ways with someone. Or when I give the gentle honk like "Yes - I am letting you merge in front of me - just go :)"

ETA - The horn is so important to me that when I was buying my car I tested the horns on all of the cars I was test driving. It was actually a deal breaker with one vehicle.

I never honk. It's like, a last response to something. It's not unusual for me to cuss and someone and flip them off, and then 5 minutes later go "THAT was an appropriate moment to honk!"

I only honk when people are doing something dangerous and need to be alerted. This is the South and people are packing. Road rage is scary.

But I was a total asshole when I was a teenager and would hold down my horn while following the person and pointing. So nice.

I'll honk if someone almost hits me. What I can't stand is when that person HONKS back - no, no, you were about to hit ME. If you're inches away from hitting me because you made a turn in front of my car and I have to slam on the brakes? There is no need to honk back!
