I have a BS in studio art and a MS in art therapy. But I still hesitate to call myself an artist. I love making art, and I guess that's what matters, right?

Oh wow. I'd totally call myself an artist if I were you!
I can be pretty artistic when I want to be, but wouldn't call myself an artiste..

@artbee: You sound like an artist to me!
I've always wanted to get a degree in art therapy, jealous!
I have an MFA, but it's in creative writing

@mrsjazz: Really? Most people have no idea what art therapy is. It's funny to hear responses when you ask people what they think it is. Why'd you decide against art therapy? Creative writing sounds fun, and still very artsy

@artbee: I agree. You totally sound like an artist to me! I studied graphic design but I wouldn't call myself an artist because I didn't end up doing anything with my studies. I took 3 years of it and then decided to do something else.

@banana: Well, I'm not currently practicing either, lol. I'm a SAHM. I'm hoping to get back to it part time when LO grows up. Or see if I can make money with an Etsy store or something.

@artbee: I don't really think there are programs that combine both writing & art. I'd have to get a degree in counseling or therapy and then use my writing background.
I had never heard of art therapy until after 9/11 when I was reading about this art therapist who was working with kids who lost family members.

@mrsjazz: Hmmmm.... I feel like they have therapy programs for everything. I know they have drama therapy, where they write plays, act, etc. It's pretty amazing to see how art therapy benefits kids in tragedy. We went to Mississippi years after Katrina to work with the kids there. It was pretty heartbreaking to see what they drew, but they really seemed to get a lot out of it.

@artbee: I think art therapy is so interesting!
And to answer your question, no I definitely don't consider myself an artist. Although I can create some "totally awesome" (in the words of my preschool students) stuff if you give me some glitter, paint, and glue
