I'm a Democrat, but my DH is a Republican. We usually respect each other's beliefs, and we enjoy talking politics every so often. I'm curious if anyone else has an SO who is of a different political party.

Sort of. My husband is a more conservative liberal and I am a more liberal conservative .

Yes! We don't have the same views on everything, but we are both strong democrats. We are actually voting for different candidates tomorrow though, probably the first time we'll ever cast different ballots!

No, I'm lean more towards NDP or Liberal, he leans more towards Conservative. (Canada).
However when discussing American politics, we both agree we'd be Democrats, lol

Yes! I think it would be really difficult if we weren't because we're both pretty passionate about it. It's such a turn-on for me when he gets riled up about politics
pomelo / 5607 posts
He's a lot more moderate than me, but ultimately we're both democrats. And really anytime we get into it on an issue, if I explain my reasons he tends to agree. So I think he's less moderate than he thinks he is.

We are on the same page, but I'm more of a liberal democrat and he's more of a moderate democrat. I feel pretty strongly in my views; I honestly could not have married a conservative. I'm sure many conservatives feel that way about democrats, too
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
Yep, we are! I'm a lot more into politics than he is though so we don't talk about it much. I try to keep him informed.
grapefruit / 4817 posts
Nope. I'm democrat, he's republican. But we're both socially pretty liberal, so it works.

DH isn't a US citizen and therefore can't register to vote here. However, we have pretty similar political views, so we'd likely be for the same party if he could.
pear / 1770 posts
We're both super left. I don't think I could have ever married a conservative.
pomegranate / 3845 posts
DH doesn't think his vote counts so he doesn't vote. We're both pretty much on the same page about social issues and have similar feelings on the economy, the federal deficit, etc. but we do have a few divergent views the crop up every now and then. We both also really struggle with the solvency and sustainability of social security, Medicare, etc. and what the right answer is in terms of safety net programs vs higher taxes, size and involvement of government, etc. Neither of us feel that any of the candidates have a plan we can fully buy into on that piece.

We see very much eye to eye on politics. We are both very liberal. It's funny because he's from a smallish very conservative Texas town and I'm from NY. I never thought I'd find my super liberal husband in Texas!

I'm a Democrat, and fairly passionate about it. Hubs doesn't follow politics much.
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
Yes, but he's a bit more liberal than I am. Plus he's a lot more into politics than I am. I think it would be really hard if we had opposing views.
grapefruit / 4988 posts
Yes, we are both very liberal. Although honestly, there are so few Republicans where we live that it would actually probably be hard to meet someone who was not in my party. I think the number is less than 5% in my city.
pomegranate / 3872 posts
Yes. I can't imagine having opposing views - especially these days.
persimmon / 1447 posts
Yes, in that we're both republican, but I'm definitely more moderate and he's super conservative.
pear / 1558 posts
We are both independents & have similar views, though he's a more conservative liberal than I am. We'll likely vote the same this coming election, though.

@simplyfelicity: us too! IRL I never meet other couples where the man is even a shred more liberal than the woman--seems like it's the other way around or they're on the exact same page.

@Mrs. D: Us too! DH bleeds blue but I come from a very NDP family. We're both respectful of each other's views, some we agree and some we don't. Never thought it was a huge deal. Politics is never brought up when we visit my family though...

@lawbee11: his Bernie impression really gets you going doesn't it?
honeydew / 7230 posts
@Mae: Same for us - both democrats through and through, but will vote for different people in the primary!
grapefruit / 4355 posts
Sort of. DH doesn't identify with either party (although, in the current environment, I really don't either). We do tend to agree on most issues though.

I have been a card carrying Democrat since I learned about American government (I remember being in 3rd grade and voting for Bill Clinton in the elementary school mock election). My husband used to be conservative/Republican because that is what his family is, but I taught him better hahahaha. Our daughter's favorite book is about unions and she likes to "march like suffragettes". She is two. I'd say we have become a pretty united family lol.

Kind of, this year it will really depend on the candidates I can usually swing either way, I won't vote for my proclaimed party just because.
grapefruit / 4361 posts
Before we started dating, in his freshman year of college, he was a conservative Republican who thought voting didn't really count. Now, he is a liberal, through and through. We both are.
pineapple / 12566 posts
We can't vote in the same places (different nationalities), but he agrees with me on US politics.
cantaloupe / 6131 posts
DH was a registered Republican for most of his adult life and I am a registered Democrat. Since moving to California, DH has been a registered independent and I'm thinking of becoming one as well.
Essentially, DH and I on the same page 99% of the time. I guess we're just more comfortable in our parties of origin? Like, if it came down to it, I'd rather err towards the side of government intervention and DH would err towards less government.
But we generally don't feel either party really reflects our values anymore, so I guess that's where we are.
pineapple / 12234 posts
We use to be. He's leans more right than I do though. I'm typically moderate but now I'm a Bernie supporter. We're both passionate about some issues we disagree on so we just don't talk politics anymore.
pomelo / 5628 posts
This election has put us much closer to the same page. I'm a true liberal. He's socially liberal but has mostly supported republicans in the past. But weirdly we are both HRC this election. He never ends up voting though...and here in CA it doesn't really matter (at least in the past) because the elections are never close.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
We are both "unenrolled" which means we can vote in either primary. And we are both pretty much in the middle but he leans republican and I lean democrat. So basically when we go vote together in the general election we cancel each other out- but I make him go anyway.
papaya / 10570 posts
Yes. Our political beliefs are very important to both of us so I don't think we could have been in meaningful relationships with people who held vastly contrasting views. We don't agree on every issue - we had a huge debate last night about the "snoopers charter", which ended in him announcing that I was "just basically wrong" - but we both lean left.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
No. DH is a Republican leaning registered Independent. I'm a Dem.
