I am completely sucked in by this case. Google alerts level sucked in.
I'm hopeful that the suspect in custody is the guy they're looking for in both HG's case and Morgan Harrington's case.

I am. I'm a UVa grad and my cousins went to her high school. It's definitely too close to home.

I am, I grew up right outside charlottesville (super country town so we had to do our shopping in charlottesville). We can't believe it. Everyone is so sucked in here also. So horrible. I know everyone says this, but charlottesville is the last place you would think to have a serial killer.

Yes, I'm also a U.Va. grad, so I've definitely been following. It is just so sad, seeing her parents breaks my heart
ETA: Oh, PS: I think we're also seeing an even darker side to the seeming epidemic of colleges mishandling sexual assault allegations (or not handling them at all). He was accused of sexual assault at TWO universities, Liberty and Christopher Newport and yet it seems nothing much became of either. Now I'm not saying this all would have been prevented if he'd done some jail time for those alleged crimes, but it definitely couldn't have hurt....

@MrsSCB: I keep thinking about how much different things could be if Liberty and Christopher Newport had pursued the matter more aggressively Our colleges have GOT to change their protocol regarding sexual assaults on campus.

@oliviaoblivia: @Littlebit: @MrsSCB: How many potential victims do you think are out there, knowing now that he's been implicated in 3 rapes and 2 murders?
pomelo / 5257 posts
@Boheme: They really do, it's just shameful. Ignoring or sweeping under the rug claims of sexual assault to maintain a university's reputation is bad enough, but now this is a pretty big slap in the face in terms of seeing larger possible consequences. Too bad it had to come at the expense of more than one young woman's life
And I don't know how many it will turn out to be, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's more than two murders. I know there have been a handful of young women who have disappeared in that general area. It's just tragic, although thank goodness he was caught on camera this time and the cops managed to track him down.

I wouldn't say I am following it but I know the major details of what is going on.

Only in the national media - I'm not really close. But the surveillance tapes are so scary. What a predator. I'm so sad for her family. I can't imagine what she must have gone through.

@TemperanceBrennan: Me too I think what Morgan Harrington's parents have done in her memory is amazing, with their Save the Next Girl foundation, and all their work both domestic and overseas in Morgan's name. I'm happy to see that they are offering the Graham family support.

I have been mildly keeping up with this. It's really sad. I'm agree with @MrsSCB: about universities not taking these things seriously.
I remember my first year in college - I had a pretty late class from 6-8 maybe? It was an engineering class, so there were just two girls in the class. The male teacher after class asked half the boys (12 guys) to walk the one girl back to her dorm and the other half the boys to walk me back to my dorm. We thought he was being a bit much and he said no... it's dangerous and you guys are young and you don't understand how dangerous it is out there. It's better to be a pack. Also for the guys it's only right to be gentlemanly now for these girls.
It was weird but I'm glad he was looking out for me. I actually built great friendships with the teacher and the guys that walked me home. I was never alone at night because those guys really took it to heart and I always had a walking buddy the rest of my time at the college.
Thinking back to how lucky I was to have such great protection during my time in college. I'm super grateful.

@Raindrop: that is really awesome! More professors need to be cognizant of the dangers on college campuses, and be proactive like yours was.

@Boheme: Yes, the Harringtons are amazing. I was blown away by her mother's strength in this article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/family-of-morgan-harrington-urges-vigilance-in-search-for-hannah-graham/2014/10/16/1ae302a4-553e-11e4-892e-602188e70e9c_story.html
@Raindrop: That's good of your professor -- I think a lot of young women (myself included) don't necessarily think about the dangers of walking around alone. It's sad to think they even have to. I remember when this story first came out everyone was saying, "Well, why didn't her friends help her? How awful!" But I actually had a roommate all through college who was famous for disappearing on us when we were out. Once she was ready to go, she'd just split without saying anything. In light of these crimes, when I think back on how many times my friend was out alone at night, after a few drinks, while this same guy was IN the area? Terrifying.

I've been following. The suspect was picked up about an hour from where I live I believe.

I am aware of the case, but not following super close. The case seems like it came right out of a bad movie. Killer college employee in the midst. One disappearance similar to another unsolved one. Suspect found on a beach states away. Hope for a happy ending vanished.

@Boheme: @MrsSCB: Exactly! Back then I really didn't understand why the professor was *so* concerned about me walking alone at night. I was just so young and so naive, I really had no clue what dangers were out there and I think I felt "safe" in my college campus and I think almost ALL girls in college probably felt/feel this way. Now I get why my professor was concerned for me... in a big way.
I definitely understand that it's sad to think that we have to worry about these types of things but it's a sad reality of the real world.

Yes, I am, and it makes me so nauseous. I used to live right by C-ville, and it feels like the safest place in America. I can't believe that this keeps happening there. What's worse is that he was accused of sexual assault twice in college and cleared both times. She was so, so cute. My heart is shattered for her family.

@oliviaoblivia: @littlebit: @mrsscb: I didn't read the comments before I posted. I'm not a UVA grad, but I lived in Richmond and spent a ton of time there. I just can't get over it. It makes me so sad. I'm so sorry for your community.

This is so old...but for some reason this popped up in my "might also enjoy" feed.
He lived in our area back in 03 and briefly went to my parents church (the one I grew up in) when he was attending CNU. He looked a lot different back then and went by a nickname. So, when he was arrested and was in the news, he wasn't as recognizable. A friend of mine eventually realized who he was and was absolutely shocked since he came to their house regularly for a Bible study they held in their home. She said he seemed relatively normal, was fairly quiet and didn't throw up any alarms. She was very unsettled that he had spent so much time at their house/hanging out, etc. So awful, and such a shame he wasn't stopped in his early days.
