Once he's old enough to learn the responsibilities of caring for a pet... Between 6-10yo!

No, I know how that game works! "I'll take care of it, I promise" = mom has another chore to avoid a dead animal.

We already have cats, and have no plans to not, so yes, although they'll be family pets not specifically LO's.

Eventually I'm sure we'll get a dog, but I'll wait for DD to beg and plead and promise that she'll take care of it and walk it every day. (Although I'm sure I'll end up doing a lot of the work too...)

@FutureMrsMcK: this is our situation too. The cats didn't want anything to do with our colicky newborn, but now that she's almost 2 they're starting to come around. She scoops their food and tries to give them hugs. Its good practice before DC2 comes along.

We already have two pups and two turtles sowhen LO is born they will have built in pets! We plan on getting more in the future. To me a home just isn't a home without pets! One day we will get more Hedgies too. One day. I can't wait to share those sweet creatures with out kids!

We already have a dog, and always plan on having one. I never had a dog growing up because my dad was allergic so DH's dog was my first, and now I never ever ever want to live without one.
I would like to get LO a fish or something for herself when she's older that she can take care of.

No, I grew up with a dog, had a rabbit and fish at one point, but my parents ended up doing all the work. I don't want the responsibility.

Absolutely. I grew up with cats and DH grew up with dogs. We'll more than likely have one of each (we currently have a cat). I think that pets are great for kids, especially if their care is partially the children's responsibility when they're old enough. My job was to feed my cat everyday and I did it like a champ! Even measured out the correct amount every time.

I am not sure. I LOVE my furbaby, but honestly once he's gone, I am not sure we will get another. I really want to travel with LO and having a dog doesn't make that very easy. Plus just the expense and dirt, and stuff like taht.

Not sure...Dh is super allergic so he'd have to do allergy shots or something. BUt we both like dogs and think it would be great for our kids to have one.
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6581 posts
YES. We already have a cat, but I never had any pets growing up and wanted a dog sooo bad. I've already started begging DH to get me a dog when LO is 2 or 3. I've got 3 years to convince him

We have two dogs. They are getting pretty old so when they die we will let the kids have some say when we pick new ones out

I hope she will enjoy the pets we already have! If she would be interested, I would allow a guinea pig or something like that, if I think she'd take care of it.

I always loved the idea of having a dog, but when I think about adding that financially to our budget, I don't think that's going to happen! And, I am sadly allergic. My allergist even told me that "hypoallergenic" dogs will irritate my allergies. Boo! Maybe we will consider it when they are older (late elementary age). They can have fish though!

We have two rotten monsters.. So LO will have pets lol. One is a goofy basset who loves people and lives for belly itches and ear scratches who I think will do well with LO. Daddy harasses Buddy the basset more than any kid ever could lol.

We already have a dog, and now I can't imagine NOT having her. So the pet is for US, not necessarily future LO!

We will probably always have a family dog. I don't like rodents, birds or reptiles as pets, so I wouldn't buy my kids a "personal" pet. The dog would belong to the whole family.

We already have a dog, although he is getting old now. When he passes on, we will probably wait until LO is old enough to know enough to really want one and beg for one, then we'll get another one. We both want to always have a dog but if we wait we'll let the kids think it's for them.

We have a dog who is pretty young so hopefully he'll be here for a long time! We definitely plan to get another dog when LO is a little older. I think it'll be good for our older dog to have a playmate once the kids are ruling the house and I think it's also good for kids to have pets to love on, and teach them to be gentle and responsible. Also, while it's so sad to think about I think it's good to have them potentially deal with the death or illness of a pet before the death/illness of a grandparent or something like that

So far we have 3 dogs, a host of barn cats, 2 goats, and a cow. Lol, I guess only the dogs are really pets, but more of family pets than anything else. When the kids are old enough for 4H, they'll probably have some kind of cattle to show.

We have 3 dogs right now - I've grown up with dogs & cats, so I can't see myself w/out a pet.
coconut / 8430 posts
Nope! I'm terribly allergic and both DH and I never grew up with one so it doesn't really interest us. I am probably in the minority though!

We already have 2 cats that we got after she was born. They'll be family pets. We may get a dog in the future as well.

We have cats and dogs, now, but I wouldn't hesitate too much to get my kids another pet...depending on circumstances.
My parents got me a dog in middle school and it was a great boost in self esteem. Some kids need a pet to help them get through hard times.

I'd love to but I get squeamish about animal hair when it sheds, plus it's extra bodily functions to deal with if they get sick/have an accident. I think it will be fish or sea monkeys all the way.
nectarine / 2152 posts
If it were up to me, I'd probably have at least 4 dogs but DH would actually kill me, haha...we have one now, who is young, so our kids will have at least one but I def plan on having more dogs when they are a little older...I loooooooove dogs so much!!
