She's only 5.5 months old but a lot of times I can calm her down if I sing one of her favorite songs.

That's a good one. I'm going to steal that from you! Distraction works if I can of think of someone really good. But I find that getting down to his level and talking to him calmly helps as well.

Nice idea, I will have to file that one away for later!

My almost one-year-old can usually be distracted by getting him to clap, offering him a puffy, or asking for a high five. He only has command of a handful of words right now- when he it's more verbal, I'll have to try things like that!

Today, we waited at the dealership for an oil change, and another child took a toy DS had been playing with so just as the tears welled up in his eyes and his lower lip curled, I asked him if he could find me the perfect mom car in the show room. He nodded yes and swallowed back the tantrum, after he was calm I explained the whole sharing thing to him (it's a daily talk we have). That was an easy one because he's a boy and he really loves all cars...I'm not so lucky all the time.
