I registered back in college and just got an email that I might be a match. Have you registered? I know they're especially looking for Asian and African American donors because ethnicity matches are important.
I was surprised that sometimes they can just take plasma from you, no operation needed.

I've been on the registry since...? highschool I think? So over 10 years. I've never been called. It makes me feel good that I can at least do that because I don't meet the requirements to donate blood

I registered a few months ago when my mom's cousin needed a donor to treat AML. They never found a match for her, unfortunately, and she recently died. I think a lot of people pulled their name off the registry after she died, but I'm keeping mine on there.

I have! I did it a few years ago through a drive, and recently also got my DH registered because a friend of a friend was needing a match, and like you said, there are far fewer Asians in the pool, so I made sure to sign him up.

Yes! I've been registered as a donor since college. One of my college friends died after a bone marrow transplant last year (he was the recipient, he had leukemia). Before his operation his friends organized a marrow donor drive because he's Asian. I would encourage everyone to become a donor.. It's really easy! They send you a swab and some paperwork and you just have to send it back.
Eta I just looked it up and couldn't find that send in service without having to pay.. So probably the best thing to do would be to find a bone marrow drive and ask them to send you a kit.

Sadly, I didn't get to proceed with the process because I'm still nursing/hoping to get pregnant in the next 6 months 
Honestly, I feel a little guilty about it. Hopefully I'll be able to donate again once we're done.

Yes, I registered a few years ago. Very important to do so as an Asian! I did let them know I was pregnant, and I won't be matched for 6mo following my due date.

@scg00387: I donated plasma to my sister. You take injections for 4 days which boost your white blood cell count, then you get hooked up to a machine for a couple of hours that takes your blood, spins out the plasma and gives you back your red blood cells (and saline, I think, to replace the volume). The only painful part is making white blood cells that fast makes your bones hurt.
