I never have...I'm not even sure I know what it consists of. You all read the same book and discuss it?
Are you, or have you ever been in a book club?

Yup, we meet once a month except the summer (Jun-Sept) and read only female writers

I LOVE my book club and have been in it for about 5 years. Some of them take different forms and from what I've heard, some don't even do much reading. In my book club, we vote on the book and everyone reads the same one. Then we meet once a month for girl talk, book discussion, wine, and dessert. We read all kinds of genres and I enjoy reading books that I wouldn't have picked myself. Even if the book is a total dud we usually have fun laughing about it. It's a lot of fun!

I am in a book club! I love it! We read one book a month and get together for a pot luck dinner. Most of the dinner is socializing and then we spend time talking about the book. I think the best part is getting some girl time, eating delicious food (we go all out for book club dinners), and the wine (which I can't have anymore). We've also read a couple books that have been turned into movies and then hold our meeting at restaurant before going to see the film together.

I'm thinking of going to one this month, I haven't been in one in years since middle school!

I'm in a book club, we meet every month or every other month...but it is a lot of wine consumption as well!

@mewtill: I agree, this sounds fun but I've never heard of anyone around me participating in one...

I haven't. My mom is in the same book group she was in 30 years ago when I was born. Now they are all great friends with grown kids and starting to have grandchildren. I think the books are their foundation but I know some months she goes to the meeting without reading the book.

I'm in a book club. A former colleague of mine asked three of her most avid reader friends if they'd want to join together and meet once every 4-6 weeks. We've been doing it for one year! It's fun!

@Bao: I guess I am technically in one now, but we haven't met in forever and I missed the last few meetings because I was super pregnant and tired, or had a screaming newborn.
I joined one that reads books that are movies. One book/movie per every two months (with no meeting in November or December). We meet one month to watch a movie, then the next month discuss/compare the book. I always thought it was backwards, I don't want to watch the movie until I have read the book. They switch hosting duties so everyone has a turn. The whole thing is really an excuse to get away from DH's and kids and drink wine.
Things kind of fell apart because half the group was homeschooling moms who got together for other social events, and the other half was working women (some with kids and some without). Myself and three other girls tried to keep it going for a while and called it "book club" but we did crafts instead, lol. We carved pumpkins in October, made cards, etc.
I would love to be in a real book club with women who truly enjoy reading.

Yeah, I've been a member of two book clubs. With each group we rotated which members chose the book we'd read and then get together to discuss. It was fun. My first book club was co-ed and I liked that one a little more, it was interesting to get the male point of view.

@mewtill: I was invited to join one by a co-worker. It was all co-workers or their wives. I waited forevvvvva for them to invite me I'd hear them talking about it and it sounded so fun but I didn't want to invite myself!

I have been in a book club for about a year. We all vote on a book and then read it. Each month a different woman has book club at her house. Ours involve a lot of gossiping and wine consumpiton, oh and a little discussion of the book!

@mewtill: I got invited by a friend. I didn't know anyone else in the group at the time but over the years I have gotten to be really close with those ladies. We've also had others come and go over the years but we've had a pretty stable group for the last 2 years. Maybe you could start one with a few friends and then have them each bring a friend that the others don't know?

My mom is in an awesome book club. I've never been in one myself but I have gone to hers a few times when she hosts. They pick a book for the month and read it, and the host will usually use that theme to serve a meal and decorate. For example, if the book takes place in India they make Indian food. They will also pick books to go with the season/holidays so that will fit with the theme. They go all out to make a huge meal for about 20 people, and they break out their best china for it. Sometimes they also discuss the book
