The outside looks normal. It smells sweet. Yet, the inside is yellow. Normal?

I thought sweet potatoes were white inside, and yams were orange? I use the white ones when I make sweet potato dishes.

I have no idea! I've never heard of a white sweet potato and I swear they weren't labeled that way at the store. They do seem less stringy!

Totally normal. Korean and Japanese sweet potatoes are yellow inside.

@mediagirl: so weird eh? The same thing happened to me. I bought a bunch of sweet potato to make a delicious orange soup and they were all white. Soup turned out delicious though!

Yep, this is a sweet potato and the bright orange ones are yams. I think they're even different structurally.

@autumnlove: yeah, I think yams are more orange and sweet potatoes are more yellow.
I love yams and sweet potatoes. I feel like some mashed sweet potatoes. I had butternut squash for Easter instead and it just did not compare. Come to think about why did I end up with a squash?

Yup- there are white and orange sweet potatoes! I personally don't care for the white ones, I like the orange ones best.

Those are the kind of sweet potatoes they have in Japan. During the fall and winter months, all the supermarkets have those for sale, freshly roasted. There's also little trucks that drive around with a grill in the back roasting those sweet potatoes. It's sooo good.

I grew up eating Japanese/Korean sweet potatoes which are white/yellow, so it was actually a big shock when I bought a sweet potato at a regular grocery store and it was orange! I've recently discovered purple yams (I think from Hawaii?) that are absolutely delicious!
