I’d love some suggestions for a piece of artwork above my fireplace. Nothing I’ve tried has looked right

I’d look for a square piece. These are two of my favorite square pieces of art. The West Elm can go either light or dark side up. I have the C+B one in my all blue master and will pair it with yellow and geometric prints in my new living room. Both can be versatile and will look nice with your pretty stone fireplace.

I have no idea if this would work for you but we have a vintage map of our favorite city (of the older part we once lived in) and I love it! I bought it online somewhere, it’s an old voting map I think. Something different!

I like using the mantle to decorate and layering items. Here’s ours. I left the treetops frame up post Xmas but normally have a matted kid picture there instead (them at a distance in a park, so not big smiling faces)

@ChitownRo: I was wondering if I should just do some decor items since I haven’t found any art so far. That looks nice!

A similar idea to the mirror mentioned above, we hung a large clock over the fireplace and then decorated the mantle. I like it because it’s very easy to mix it up for the seasons (ignore the balloon, this pic is from dd’s birthday)

I would do a giant geometric mirror in the middle with layers of other things like pps have suggested in front/to the sides. The main thing is scale--you need something really large above the fireplace or the fireplace will dwarf it.

Although with a mirror, you also have to consider what you are reflecting on the opposite wall. If it's high enough and it's reflecting a wall, then that's good.
If it's reflecting something busy/messy then you don't want to do a mirror.

I second a mirror! I think I got my mirror from Home Depot.
Here's ours at Christmas:

A mirror would look great. A circular one would be nice in that angular space.
Also Minted has some really beautiful artwork!

I personally wouldn't do a square piece only because everything else in that space is square shaped.
I really also wouldn't do a large mirror, that creates a lot of visual noise in terms of the reflection. I would do a large, arch shaped window frame (empty) that is put up off center and leaning on the ledge. Then I would do a grouping of three similar items on the other side and call it done.

@Anagram: @hellobeeboston: @looch: great points and ideas
I think I’ll have to go to a store and do some looking around. I like the idea of something more round up there

@hellobeeboston: thank you for the minted rec - I’ve never looked there and they do have nice stuff!
