This probably reinforces what a lot of us do or are planning to do, but since it hit my info I thought I'd share.

Interesting. As my son has gotten older (now in the equivalent of kindergarten) I've been looking for ways of praising him instead of just saying something like "good job". He really seems to respond when I say something like "that's a very interesting idea" or "I like the way you did that" instead of just a blanket "good".

In addition to what was mentioned, my LO likes funny rhyming phrases as she gets older- Awesome, Possum!
Of course adding in personal comments like, "It's really beautiful and warmed my heart. I thought about what you did a lot today" draws out the relational aspect of the impact of her actions on someone else. I like to make overt cause and effect connections as I didn't see that too much when I was growing up.

I really need to get better at this. I'm already struggling with this with Xander (3.5). He already prefers to do things that are easy and gets frustrated with things that challenge him and quits when it gets hard. I don't know how to teach him that trying to solve things on our own can be fun and that it's not always about "winning".
