Reputation. I am in a traditionally non flexible field (law) and have been able to maneuver myself into a very flexible, balanced situation because my boss knows and trusts that even if he can't see my face, I'm doing my job as well as I would be if I were sitting in my office for 10 hrs/day, 5 days a week.

At my old job I'd have to stay more competitive. But now I'm in a small, private company so I know my job's pretty well protected. I mean, I never know, but unless business goes downhill I don't foresee any changes.

We have a strong teacher union and a seniority list. I consider myself lucky!

I have to split duties a lot with DH. I'm up for promotion in June and DS was sick yesterday and I had DH stay home because I needed to be at the office. I make sure to casually mention that too, so when it is my turn to be home, it doesn't seem like I'm the only one who ever does it. We're also thinking about getting a morning nanny in the fall when we'll have two kids in daycare.

It's tough when both spouses have careers, not just jobs. I'm sure it would be a lot easier on DH if he could go all out at work and I stayed home or was in a less demanding administrative job. But instead I'm a 6 figure earner and we have to compromise on whose career takes precedence at any given moment.

My skillset is extremely specialized and I have a ton of historical knowledge as well as the ability to function in the new world, so that's my safety net for now. I need very littel direction when it comes to getting things done, which is huge in my group right now.

I am pretty fortunate. I am the only female where I work and I am by far the youngest. So they are pretty good to me seeing most of them are old enough to be my dad they all watch out for me and are so good to me. My husband deploys a lot, all of them are prior Military, so they get a little "papa bear" on me and always have my back.
