Hey everyone, I wanted to ask if anyone has or had asthma when they were ttc and actually conceived and how long it took for them to concieve. I am currently ttc and my docs are saying that it is taking longer than usual because I have asthma and also because where I live the elevation is high. My asthma isnt extreme but for the past year I have not been taking my inhaler, I just started taking it recently after the doc advised me to do so. Everything else looks fine, I have had alot of testing done. I live in Colorado.

We conceived within a normal timeframe. I didn't have a real need to use asthma drugs during TTC frequently, but used my albuterol when necessary.

I have asthma. I've never heard about that affecting fertility. We saw a fertility specialist for male factor infertility and he never mentioned it. I had my DS from out first try at IVF.

I have asthma. I needed fertility treatments but only because I have other issues. My RE never even brought up my asthma.

Maybe I'm naive, but why would having asthma affect fertility?

Thank you everyone, @sweetcaroline I use albuterol as well and @adira I know I dont agree with it but that is what the docs are saying maybe they have no other reason, I still dont think it has any affect on fertility though just wanted to ask the question so I dont think about it as much

I used my inhalers with both pregnancies and beforehand, we did have one MC and it took almost a year to get pregnant after it but I don't think asthma had anything to do with it, we're in the same location

Utter rubbish IMHO! Whoever heard of that?
FWIW, I have conceived easily three times (one was a CP) with asthma and I've never been very good at controlling it/ taking my medication.

@faithlove224: It's annoying if there actually IS a reason, but your doctors are not looking for it because they are blaming the asthma. I hope you find luck soon.

I have asthma, take meds for it daily, and had zero trouble conceiving any of our three children (one still baking). There is a link between altitude and fertility but depending how high you are and how long you have lived there, it shouldn't have that much of an impact. Are you from Colorado originally? If so, your body should be completely adjusted to the thinner air, whereas if you've only been there for a short while, it may well be impacting your fertility somewhat, although only temporarily. If I recall correctly, there is a threshold at which point the air is too thin for the body to sustain a pregnancy, but it's something really high like 12,000 or 14,000 feet above sea level (from memory, could be off somewhat on those numbers).
