DD is six weeks as of today. She's been taking bottles since the beginning, although hesitantly at first and not very much. So we switched from the classic Avent bottles to the Doctor Brown's bottles. No dice. We asked HB what bottle to get next and we settled on the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature bottles, the ones that are supposed to cut down on colic. We've had those for nearly four weeks now without issue. It seemed to make feedings easier!
But suddenly we're on a bottle strike?
It's been like this all day and all last night: we make a bottle, we warm it up for her, we test it, we give it to her, and she squalls. And she squawks. And she carries on a great noise until either a pacifier is stuck in her mouth (which she will take) or boob is. Half the time, she take either pacifier or boob and just glare at me while she comfort sucks. Sometimes, she's genuinely hungry but I know I'm not producing enough to feed her the way exclusively (breast reduction surgery, etc).
First, DH thought it was the formula. We received some Enfamil - from the Enfamil company - in the mail yesterday and we were using it because we had run out of infant. We started off with the Gentlease, hoping it would help some of her gas (she gets a lot of gas and bubbles, no spit up to speak of just bad gas). She took some of it yesterday but hasn't since. We thought, well, maybe it was just too much of a different taste so we tried half and half. That didn't fly either. Then we went back to just Newborn but she won't eat that either.
Then DH figured, well, maybe it was a bad batch of formula. So he gets some of my Newborn ready-made bottles and dumps them in a bottle, warms it up. This she takes a little easier but still not the entire bottle - which was all of two ounces. Usually she eats between three and four ounces. Okay, we say, maybe that was a bad bin. So we make a four ounce bottle for the next feeding using an instant pre-measured packet of formula. No dice. She won't take it.
Every time I try to feed her a bottle, she may take an initial few gulps and then she just cries. It doesn't matter how many burps I get out of her, how many times I jostle, sing, rock, or what have you, she will not latch on to the bottle again for nothing or nobody. I've tried handing her over to DH, helping him guide the bottle in, thinking - you know - maybe since I'm feeding her, that's why she's insistent on boob. No dice on this either. But she'll take a pacifier!
We're at a loss as to what to do. Nothing else is different. Water is still from the same place, the water from our fridge which goes through a filter that was changed less than a month ago. We haven't switched brands of formulas (except briefly to try the Gentlease last night) or changed how we washed bottles or anything. Everything is as it has been but suddenly DD just cries and cries instead of eats.
She's still producing plenty of wet diapers and a few dirty diapers so I'm not overly concerned but I have a sinking feeling that I'm in for a sleepless night unless we can fix this problem. She hasn't eaten a whole bottle (four ounces) all day and won't take more than a few gulps. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Baby girl needs to eat and mommy needs to rest!
