DD just turned 2 and I am getting pretty comfortable with how well she goes up and down the stairs. I think we can remove them soon. When will you take yours down?

My key criteria will be, when the kids are a big enough size that a fall down the stairs isn't likely to be fatal.
Maybe 4 or so?

@mrbee: accidents can happen but i think it also depends on how rambunctious your kids are and the floor plan of your house. we have a few gates and i think some will be safe to remove soon based on their position.

we have a spiral staircase that's pretty dangerous. mr. bee broke his toe on it. i don't think we'll be removing the gate any time soon!

inside the house we have 2 gates. 1 to go down 2 stairs the other to go in the basement.
They actually haven't been locked since Mavrick turned 15 months. He knows how to go up and down the stairs (backwards) no problem. He actually only fell 3 times (which is pretty good considering that he goes up and down those things pretty frequently.

@mrbee: I think that sounds perfect. I honestly think I might leave them up until my youngest is 6. We have such steep stairs that even I fall on them sometimes.

@Mrs. Bee: oh yes, those things are scary -- even for adults! DH always refused to get apts with spiral staircases as he is big guy and they were always difficult to navigate for him.

We just removed ours; DD is 22 months. Once DS starts crawling we'll have to put them back up though.
