I'm looking for an awesome way to store my necklaces. I'm not really into DIY though.
I have a variety of chunky j crew type necklaces, dainty nice necklaces, and the really long fashion pendant type (like below my boobs and belly button).
I prefer something where they can hang and I can see them all - not a box.
Any suggestions?

6 chunky necklaces that lay around the collar bone area
6 long ones (like on a chain but fashion jewelry)
About 9 nice ones (like david yurman initial necklace for example) that are on a thin chain and lay around my collar bone.

@youboots: I like that! I have a little corner in our bedroom outside of our bathroom where I have my perfumes and currently the disaster of necklace storage I have. My perfumes are in acrylic storage so that would go nicely.
But I also like the idea of in my closet too. Easy to see when picking out what to wear.

I would do those shadow boxes with a door as opposed to just pegs to keep the dust off.

@cascademom: Oh great! Glad to hear you like it. I just ordered something very similar from Anthropologie last night. I decided that since we rent I want to wait on anything that hangs on the wall until I try other options first. (I'm allowed it's just a pain).

I use a tie rack. I see you aren't cool with hanging something on the wall but it's perfect for all of my chunky and non chunky neckalces:

@mediagirl: I saw that too and like the idea! I'm going to try the stand and if it's still a pain in the ass (tangling and overlapping and stuff) I'll give in to hanging.

Something like this, but you can decide the layout based on the lengths of your necklaces.

And that reminds me...they make command Velcro strips so you don't have to hammer things into the wall....I've used those a couple places too.
Hmmmm...giving me a lot to consider!

@SweetiePie: One thing to keep in mind - sterling silver necklaces will tarnish if left hanging out in the open air. Which is really, really annoying, at least to me. I finally gave up and store my silver necklaces in tiny airtight bags inside a jewelery box drawer

I prefer trays for my necklaces (you can even get them in anti-tarnish for your sterling pieces). I don't like to hang them because hanging them adds to the wear and tear (especially if the necklace has any weight to it and/or is placed on a hook close to the clasp/closure). Hanging can also lead to creases/bends/kinks, depending on the necklace/configuration.

Something else to keep in mind...I used a tie rack in my old house (because it was there in the master closet when I moved in).
A lot of my costume jewelry tarnished from being hung on the metal hooks. I looked for a long time for non metal options, and ended up making my own.
I used a wooden type box (they're inexpensive at antique stores.
And I glued wooden pegs across the bottom for necklaces.
hook style earrings perch really nicely in the horizontal slats, and I keep rings and nicknacks in the little boxes too.
Sort of like this, but without all the metal hooks and rings (the earrings stay put just by being perched on the wood dividers)

I've been thinking about getting something like this. I'm currently using some flat plastic containers with the adjustable compartment dividers, but they just aren't curing it anymore. I'm too lazy to pull them out and put my necklaces away, and they end up in a big knotted pile on my dresser. My sister has something similar to this and it seems to do the trick.
