This weekend my husband and I finally made some progress on the name front. We have very different tastes, but both really like the name Bodhi.
Bodhi is Sanskrit, and means awakening/enlightenment, but Bode is German and means messenger.
I prefer the spelling of Bodhi, but Bode seems to fit us better. I'm just afraid people will pronounce it like in the word "abode," where Bodhi seems more straightforward.
What is your first impression of the name and the spellings?

I like the name! I think I prefer the spelling Bode. Bodhi I might be inclined to pronounce Bod-hee. Is Bodi an alternative spelling you would consider?

When I saw the names, I honestly was confused, because I didn't think they were pronounced the same! I was inclined to pronounce "Bodhi" like "Boad-ee" and "Bode" like "Boad" (rhymes with road).
Although I do agree with @Winniebee - an alternative spelling might make it even more clear, but you should go with whatever you like. People are going to mispronounce the name, regardless of the spelling. Even classic simple names get mispronounced all the time. I would pick the spelling you like and just know that whatever you decide, you'll have to correct people.

I like Bodhi. I agree that it is a name that will get mispronounced so you should go with the spelling you like the best if you pick that name.

I find it interesting that Bode would be so mispronounced, but Kobe probably wouldn't. I guess sharing a name with a famous basketball player and delicious beef suddenly makes grammatical sense to people.

I much prefer Bode. Yes there may be some pronounciation mistakes but it's not that hard to correct. I feel like Bodhi would kind of be a weird name if you're not part of a culture that would be associated with Sanskrit. But that's just me... it's really up to you guys what makes you more comfortable. But part of me says that if you have reservations about both spellings that maybe there is another name out there that would work better for you.

@MamaMoose: Yeah, that's kind of how I felt about it, as well, but every Bodhi I've ever known/heard of has spelled it that way. Except Bode Miller, who is a famous skier. I do like Bode, and it being initially pronounced "Boad" doesn't bug me since it just sounds like a nickname of a variety of names. I feel like I'm leaning towards "Bode."
@Mrs. Bee: I was a super active (aka: really really hyper) child, so I'm hoping that giving my kid a very calm/serene name will help counteract the whole "payback's a bitch," issue. Ha!

Between the two options, I prefer Bode. But, I do see that it may get mispronounced...

I would say Bodie, because I personally mis pronounce Bodhi and Bode.

i like the name! but not crazy about the spelling. bodhi looks very ethnic. but i'm more inclined to pronounce bodhi like it's supposed to be rather than bode (bode looks definitely like abode).... and you can't do body (like brody)....and bodie/bodee looks too close like boodie and a lil girlish....
maybe boedy?

To be honest I had no idea how to prounounce Bodhi, but once someone said 'Bode' like 'Kobe' i made way more sense to me. I was reading it like 'abode.'

love the name bodhi! reminds me of point break, but in a good way, ha! if you're worried about the pronunciation, i agree with MrsJYW and Blushink - go with bodie

I like Bode too. Everyone will always mispronounce even totally mainsteam names. My best friend's name is Joan and people always pronounce it as "joanne". She's constantly correcting people. I say go with what you like!

I would go with Bodie. Bodhi can be mispronounces (body) and bode will be pronounce like a(bode).

I like Bode. Or I'd maybe go with Bodie. I'm not really a fan of the spelling "Bodhi" though.

I like Bode. I think people can butcher either if they try hard enough. (I think that way about pretty much every name).

I like Bode too. If I didn't know from your post that Bodhi was pronounced the same way, I would have pronounced it "Bod-hi". I have a name that is frequently misprounced, and I don't really mind. You should pick the spelling you like better
