We've bought 4 different baby gates for the top of our stairs in our rental home and none of them work. It is an extra wide staircase with moldings and trim. Pics below. Any suggestions??

My aunt attached a piece of wood to the banister to mount a gate at the top of her stairs. Would that work?

@sorrycharlie: that's what we were thinking of doing. Just not sure how safe it would be. We are probably going to destroy this banister

We have a similar situation at the bottom of our stairs. We ended up getting a regular tension mounted gate, and then using small pieces of foam rubber between the gate and the wall and bannister at the awkward spaces. It looks a little weird but works.

You can mount a decorative piece of wood as the new base and use that to put all your hardcore fixings on.

For the top of your stairs you really need a wall-mounted gate. What gates did you already try? Kidco makes a number of gates that might work.
A gate specifically designed for wide, irregular areas:

Or any of their regular gates...:

...with an extension or two:

We struggled with this because DS swung from the gates and broke them. Currently we have no safety gates.

@winniebee: this is what we have. Munchkin Wood and Steel Designer Gate, Dark Wood/Silver https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KX7Q4DW/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_w7x.vb82TFZHC
You can pressure mount it which I'm sure your landlord will appreciate. Each anchor is adjustable which is great for accounting for the base moulding depth. Obviously because you're mounting onto the banister I wouldn't let T hang off of it!
M does occasionally hang off of it. But she gets fair warning about punishment so she doesn't do it often. She hasn't been able to shift it. The only problem was when my older niece and nephews were here and kept slamming the gate!

We also have old stairs with lots of moldings. This is what we did. Similar set up at the top.
