We are moving this week to a 2 story home, and we need a gate for the top of the stairs. Our favorite gate won't work, but our 4 year old has figured it out anyway so it probably isn't the best choice. Anybody have a gate that you love?

We have two of these. They would be basically impossible for a kid to open themselves as they take two hands for an adult.

This is what we use. The latch is simple but takes quite a bit of strength. I think it would be hard for a kid to do.

We have this at the top of our stairs and our three year old hasn't figured it out yet.

We have this one. http://www.munchkin.com/wood-and-steel-metal-gate-group.html Although, unless there are extraordinary circumstances, I'd focus more on teaching my 4 year old how to use the stairs properly. I don't think I've had my gate closed since my kid was 2.5.

@Grace: that's a good point. I'm a super sketchy parent and haven't gated the top of the stairs for a while with a 19 month old. And she goes upstairs to get her stuffed animal and starts coming down solo before I notice sometimes. She can climb stairs super fast.

@Grace: My kids can both do the stairs just fine...I just have super early risers and want them to stay upstairs until 6 am

We have a Kidco self-closing gate that you have to retract the latch and lift to open it. My 4yo can't open it, but we've told her not to touch the gate, and she doesn't bother with it, so I can't speak to more "adventurous" kids
We have a 1yo, but even without her, we would have kept the gate up because our stairs are fairly steep and there's hard marble tile and a large floor to ceiling window at the bottom . If she falls (and she's very distracted on the stairs), she'll really hurt herself. Also, the top of the stairs area is pretty narrow and is in between her room and ours/bathroom, so if she trips and falls the wrong way, which she does quite often, she could just fall down the stairs.

We have this one:

It was the only one that worked with our stair design. It's very straight-forward, but definitely takes a bit of strength to open, so my 4 year old can't open it yet.
