My six month old is officially on the move and our new home has a stone fireplace hearth that has made me nervous from the day that we moved in. I need to at least protect the edges from my little man. Does anyone have any ideas that isn't completely unsightly??

When we visit my parents we fold up a blanket and drape it over the edge to cushion it. It doesn't look gorgeous but it's better than, like, a pool noodle.

A body pillow in a decorative case or nice throw pillows? Not sure how much rough edge you're trying to protect him from, but that'd be my best guess for the bottom edge(s) at least.

My ILs have a custom fit foam thing that fits over the whole hearth. It's fairly nice looking, we can sit comfortably, and they put throw pillows so it looks like a bench.

@RyBMama: We have a similar situation - DH has constant anxiety about it.
Our stone fireplace has hearth stones that are about 2.5" tall - so the pool noodle hack I have seen wont work for us.
Ultimately what we did with DD1 (and will do with DD2) is put some of out decorative pillows at the corners for the weekends. On week days she is only in the house for about 2 hours after daycare and DH and I are always very present. We also put some of our catch all bins (for toys, blankets, etc) on the hearth to discourage her from climbing up on it.
We've made it 3 years with out a major incident from DD1 - fingers crossed we'll have the same luck with DD2!

Gosh, I used a kit of foam edging. Easy peasy.

We bought a sheet of thick foam online, cut it, stacked it and glued it, then covered it with a nice material. It works so well.

There's a store that sells foam in our city and we just went and bought some to make a covering. I wrapped the top in fabric.

@RyBMama: do you intend on still making fires? The foam my SIL and MIL used has held up to even sparks flying out. Not sure fabric would.
