With DS#1, we had a Boppy newborn napper and a rock n play. DS#2 is due in June and I'm thinking about getting a swing. Do you think a swing is necessary? I know I will be wearing DS#2 more but was thinking a swing might be a safe soothing place for him to nap or hang out with a toddler around.

We loved our swing. I can't wait to break it out with #2! We bought a battery powered travel swing to save space.

I would wait till baby arrives? DD1 HATED the swing but DD2 loved it and would nap and sleep in it. I mourned the day she got too big for the swing.

I had a swing with LO1 who didn't love it, and I never pulled it out for LO2.

I bought a second swing so i could have one on two floors. A yes for me. All my girls have taken epic naps in the swing.

I didn't have one with my first but whenever we went somewhere with one he would nap sooooo well (aka longer then 30 mins) so I want to get one this time.

I LOVED having a swing with T. We ended up selling his though because it was so huge and took up so much space. Going to buy a much smaller and compact one for #2. Can't wait!

My first never liked the swing (we borrowed one for her at least) but my second LOVED the swing and I went out and bought one ASAP

We used a swing with LO1, but sold it when we moved abroad. When LO2 came along, we took a wait and see approach since they are incredibly expensive here. We ended up not needing one.

I think it totally depends on the baby - for us K loved the swing for naps...we got such nice long naps out of it so it was totally worth it!
Can you maybe find one to borrow and see - before investing?!

We have had a small swing with both babies. my older one never liked it. This baby doesn't mind it and has napped in it, but not often I would see if you can try the new baby out in a swing before buying one, if that's possible. I do think having a place to put baby on every floor is important though!

I voted you can make do, but a swing might be nice! I'd try to find a used one if you go for it!

We had a mamaroo with our first but he never liked it. We still have it, but also borrowed a swing from a friend for #2. I'd say see if you can borrow or buy one used, then it's less of an investment if it turns out you don't really need it.

I second borrowing one. We got rid of our swing after our first, and the second didn't like it at all. Glad I didn't spend the money.

Mine hated the rnp but LOVED the swing. So I kind of think it depends on the baby. You could always wait and see if you can try out a friends or buy once pre owned incase baby doesn't like it.

I didn't use the swing often for fear my kid would be addicted to swing naps and I voted you could do without one.

We didn't have a swing either for LO #1, and after seeing how well he did in the one at daycare and our friends' house, it is our only required major gear purchase for this baby!

There was a 2-4 week span when our son wouldn't sleep in ANYTHING except his swing. We even kept him there overnight, moving it into his bedroom overnight. It was horrible. BUT it would've been a million times worse without a swing at all.

I think it depends on the baby. Some kids love them and some kids hate them! I would see if you could borrow one and then you can find out if your second even likes the swing at all.

First baby it was a "necessity," but second baby it was a "nice to have" but not sure it was worth the money. I think it just depends on the baby!

We didn't have one with number one either, and so far (due next week) we haven't purchased on for number two. I'm going to see how he does before borrowing/purchasing one!

i borrowed a swing for DD2 and i loved having a safe spot for her. i'm already barely using it at 4 months though (maybe once a day?) so i would find one used or borrow!

We couldn't live without the swing for LO. We borrowed one at 7 weeks and it changed our lives! She took all her naps there until she was about 4 months. It will be the first purchase for LO #2! In fact, I know this sounds crazy, but I kind of want one for upstairs and one for downstairs.
I think it will come even more handy with an older LO because most babies will fall asleep on their own from the rocking, so you don't have to always rock the baby to sleep or bounce or what have you. Watch our next kid hate it though!

We used the swing much more with our second, actually.

We never got a swing with our first and I think back to some of the nap difficulties we had and I can't believe I never got one. My sister had her 3rd a month after our LO was born and is now done so she has given us our swing for next time. Going off her experience it was definitely helpful for her to have a safe place off the ground for the baby.
