I know there are a few Baltimore bees here...is there anyone who lives in the commuter suburbs that would be willing to have a quick chat about towns/neighborhoods/schools via wall or email? I actually grew up in the area but haven’t been back in about 18 years - scoping out Zillow it seems like things have changed a bit! Thanks!!

How far from Baltimore are you willing to be?? I live about 35-40 miles east but it's a great place with great schools... My DH commutes to Columbia and I commute to Rockville.
We live in New Market/Lake Linganore. I'm guessing it's too far....but if you want any info let me know I'll be glad to share.

@Ajsmommy: thanks! I’m vaguely familiar w/ New Market and think that’s too far for us, unfortunately. DH would be working downtown, maybe occasionally in Owings mills, and ideally wants a commute under 30 minutes. I feel like Columbia is about the furthest we’d be willing to live and thought that was where we’d look, but I’m totally unimpressed with the listings I see (at least on Zillow). I grew up in Eldersburg - it looks like that area is booming.

@PinkElephant: it's definitely growing around here! Which is good and bad at the same time. To me traffic is the biggest beast so as you mentioned I'd def make sure you look within an area you are ok to commute to and from.

I live in the city but work in the burbs. Many of my colleagues with kids live in Columbia. People also seem to like Catonsville and Ellicott City.

I'm from Ellicott City but haven't lived there since '01. It was a great place to grow up with wonderful schools but the housing is $$.

I'm from Carroll County (walled you, too) and lived in Ellicott City as an adult. I tried to buy there in 2005 but was priced out of the market then. The prices never really went back down after the boom, and now they're going back up again! It's a tough market. The traffic in Columbia/Ellicott City is absolutely ridiculous. TBH, I can't ever see myself moving back there. Then again, I now live in an area where the traffic isn't *too* bad. If it was comparable, I'd consider it in a second. I miss that area so much.
