Is a barky cough always indicative of croup?
My3.5 year old has been sick and the worst of it was over a week ago. Of course there's the lingering cough. Tonight it seems to be acting up more and sounds barky at times. I know a barky cough is usually associated with croup.
Just put some vapor rub on her soles and tried zarbees because she can't seem to stop coughing for more than one minute.
Her cough had gotten a lot better during the day.

@regberadaisy: sounds like what my girls just got over! It was suggested to take them out in the cool air and that really helped. Hope she feels better soon, my kids were miserable at night.

@Bao: @lawbee11: when your Los has croup what was the remedy? Is it one of those wait it out scenarios or antibiotics are needed?

@regberadaisy: Wait it out. Ped gave us an oral steroid that helped with her breathing. My friend's 2-year-old recently got it and got a steroid shot that she said really helped. But other than something like that just wait it out unfortunately

This seems to be what my LO has, too. She was really barky last weekend and her breathing was so rattly. She also had a fever but that was just for one day. What @Bao: said is true: cold air helps. We have the cool mist humidifier running 24/7 and have taken her outside for walks to help.
I can't wait for this cough to be gone!

My kids have had barky coughs before but have never had croup. My mom friend use to say hot steam (turning on the shower with the bathroom door closed) and cold air (like a morning walk outside) helped her kids with croup.

I wonder if my DD recently had it? She spiked a fever out of nowhere followed by a barky cough and somewhat labored breathing. Took her to the ped the next day and he gave us a cortisone suppository for the breathing and cough syrup. The fever and breathing problems were gone within 36 hours and the cough lingered about a week, but was a little better every day. I'm not sure if it was croup, but I don't always get the name of the diagnosis in English because of the language barrier.
