He is having a Lego themed party, so I assume he will get TONS of legos. Not opposed to gifting the same thing, but thought it might be nice to throw in some variety 
Looking to spend under $50. He lives in a different state so we aren't attending the party, so it will need to be shippable...bonus if it's Amazon Prime

So my daughter is 5 and boy is 18 months so I might not be the best advice
But lots of boys in her class last year liked Spider-Man stuff or Star Wars stuff.
But it was last year so maybe it's out of trend?

How about a Lego backpack, Lego watch, or this cool mini-figure display case? You can maybe add a mini-figure bag or two.

A Hot Wheels set or a Marble Run set? Both are favorites for my almost 4 year old son.

@Tanjowen: Amen to the Hot Wheels! We just visited my FIL, who had saved ALL of DH's Hot Wheels/Micro machines/etc and DS1 is alllll about them!!
I ended up ordering him a subscription to High Five magazine. My 3.5 year old loves it, especially bc it's mail just for him But also it's fun to read together, AND you can throw it away when he's done with it (haha. But seriously). I might also send a little something that will arrive in time for his actual bday!

I like the subscription idea! I was also going to add board games if you think the parents won't mind playing or be annoyed by it. our four year old is obsessed with them right now (particularly monopoly jr, zingo, and chutes and ladders)

My 5 year old just had a birthday. The favorite for both him and my 3 year old were stomp rockets. I bought them for my nephews when they were little and they all loved them too. I think it's way below the $50 threshold so I might give some books too. Maybe lego ones?
Eta: other recent gifts we liked were practical things like a Thermos Funtainer (can find all sorts of characters) and trucks...always trucks...
